What is TV Mode and why is its removal important

I have seen several mentions in this forum and on blogs of TV mode or TV Layout in Plex Media Player and that the new Plex Player (for desktops) does not have TV Mode and that this is apparently significant for home theater PCs or for where the server and the player are on the same PC.

I’m relatively new to Plex so I’m a little confused what TV mode does and why its important. The help articles just say that the TV Mode button controls whether the player is “locked in TV format” but does not elaborate on what TV format is or why its useful.

I run the Plex server and the Plex media player on the same pc. I never knew there was something called TV mode and that it might be going away and could affect how I use Plex. The PC’s desktop is displayed on the TV and everything works fine as far as I can tell.

Sorry if this is a newbie question, but I have done a lot of searching and I’m still confused. Can someone provide a short overview of what TV mode is, when it is useful and why its lack in the new Plex player is important?

Thanks.

tv mode is like running kodi full screen/exclusive mode, sort of like it is a full screen game.

giving it better control over refresh rates and resolutions.

and as far as I remember, it doesn’t use mouse, you need to use keyboard or a remote control of some sort.

and can pass through audio to a receiver.

HTPC users often run it as a dedicated player app directly hooked to their tv/surround system.

plex changed their mind, so PMP and tv mode will remain available/supported for the foreseeable future.
