I have added folders from my NAS drive to my plex account.
Why do I have to have my laptop on and plex open for the app on devices to see the NAS drive?
The NAS drive does not switch off and all my devices can see the NAS drive, so why does plex need the laptop on as well?

Plex Media Server is a server, and is running on your Laptop. As such, your Laptop needs to be running, for clients to connect to it, since that’s where the clients get the stream from
As an alternative, you could install PMS directly on your NAS
Plex says it is not a valid drive?
I uninstalled PMS then reinstalled and tried to install on my NAS drive which I have mapped as Z drive. But the PMS said Z was not a valid drive?

You should NOT do that!
Go here instead, and select Netgear as your platform:
https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/
Hmmm this has gone right over my head now.
I followed your link and there are three options to download.
I have downloaded all three, they are all zip files.
In all three I cannot see a exe file to install the server?
Had a look on plex, cant find any step by step guide what to do with the files.?
