I posted here a few weeks ago and TeknoJunky recommended Nvidia Shield Pro. I’ve been trying to get one ever since but they’ve been sold out coast to coast. Anyone know why?
I finally bought the non-pro version and finally Atmos works when streaming from (off site) Qnap Plex server! So Far I like Shield more than Apple TV 4K.
There’s a 14 day return policy so the plan was to hold out for the Pro version still but I’m wondering if the non-pro will suffice. I really dont care about the Pro’s ability to run Plex Server, because I already have that set via my Qnap server. The USB’s would be nice, but are not all that meaningful to me. Are there any other reasons to get the Pro? Its clear that both versions are Dolby Vision and Atmos but are they identical? On Nvidia’s site, the descriptions for each are a bit different… I believe one says “compatible” and one says “supported”
Blame Nvidia for the lack of product. They, probably, have something else in the pipeline and they did not manufacture enough to cover the gap. That was probably by design. Companies do that kind of crap all the time. They do everything to enhance the bottom line with complete disregard for the customer.
Unless you are wanting to use the Shield as a server (you can add external storage to fix that if you want) the standard version should be just fine for Plex. Plex playback is very much non intensive for the Shields so there is little to choose between the standard and pro. It is also the gaming aspects, which I have never used my Shield for, that the pro proves better than the standard.
You could be right but every iteration of the Shield has mysteriously been out of or low in stock just before the next model has come out. It may or may not be planed but it does seem to be highly coincidental.
One thing I thought of after my first post it “could” be that the factory in China is highly impacted by the novel coronavirus outbreak. Whatever has happened it is doubtful that we will ever know for sure. China is not exactly open about such things.
Not likely.
The ones that do show up and don’t work are sent to the Gulag and there’s a million of them standing in line outside waiting for an ‘entry level position’ to open up.
I think the ‘Supply Problem’ is manufactured - by Nvidia.
