Occasionally, I run into a discrepancy for the release year Plex uses for my movies versus how I have named them. I carefully name them using the “Title (Year)” format, usually pulling from The Movie DB.
For example: Color Out of Space
The Movie DB: lists as 2020 (Theatrical release)
IMDB: lists as 2019 (Premiere release)
Currently, I’m running PMS 1.23.3.4707 on my NAS and using “Plex Movie” for my movie scanner and movie agent.
Does the “Plex Movie” agent pull from IMDB? The Movie DB? Another source?
In fact I have never had FileBot miss on any movie that was even remotely “main stream.” I do have a few movies that FileBot, and any Plex indexer fails to find. They are all either in a language that is rather unusual, like “Nahuan” that are not easily found but a lot of that could be spelling issues, or there are some VERY old movies that are simply not in the various databases.
For anything reasonable FileBot correctly names and dates the movies.
I have also found that if a movie was released in two different countries on different years that either date seems to match pretty well if the “name” is otherwise correct. Of course the date used in Plex is, mostly for me, the one for the US release.
The actual language of the primary audio track also seems to effect Plex’s (and Emby’s) choice of date a bit.
An issue I haven’t run into lately, but could at any moment, I suppose - is TMDB’s infinite wisdom to allow Users to add a country release date - and not the actual release date.
That means that if someone saw Casablanca (1942) on a TV Set in the Window of Earl’s Hardware in 2021 and made that the English release date - that’s what Plex shows.
My irritation at that - is beyond description… but again, I haven’t noticed it lately.
