I’m confused. This used to be simple, now there are 3 versions of PMP for my Mac:
• There is the continuing (and appearing to be the latest, June 8, 2020 version - 1.12.1.1253-c29aa096) which seems to be updated most frequently, has the highest system requirements, but yet the LOWEST version number. Confusing.
• There is the newly re-released 2.5x thread, May 19, 2020, version 2.58.0.1076-38e019da. It has lower requirements (will go back to 10.10 and does not require 10.13) and continues to appear to be getting updates. This was not listed as an option just a month back. It has both the HTPC interface and embedded web interface and seems to be a more full-featured set of options than the 1.1 thread
• There is the 3.0x thread, updated as recently as February. It appears to be listed as a beta build, and bears a version of 3.0.0.32-d310c89b6. It requires macOS 10.12 which is newer than what the 2.5 thread requires but LESSER than what the 1.x thread requires (go figure). Comments about it were last updated in October of 2019, and confusing messaging from various employees alternatively claim it is the future of pmp and should be tested, or that it was abandoned and the 2.5 branch is what should be used.
It would be REALLY helpful if someone at Plex with real knowledge of all this can publish a roadmap and explain to users what each version is for and which we should be using now, and going forward. I could not find out. this seemingly simple information while browsing the forums.
Thank You
This is the regular PMP, which you should use – unless you are into testing.
It will lose the web app mode in a future version.
This is a preview version, which was intended for users who like to test things. It was mainly released to have a larger test sample for a new software dependency.
Is Plex for Mac the newer version and the one we should all use if we are not going to connect it to a TV? Why would we need both versions if all the PMPs have BOTH the Full Screen and embedded web interfaces, why would we use the Plex for Mac version?
Is the 2.5 of PMP on par with the 1.x Plex for Mac? The 1.x is newer, yet the 2.5x seems to have all the features AND allows me to better navigate my laptop screen when on the road and want to put it in full scree mode?
If 3 is the future of PMP, why does it have LOWER system requirements than the 2.5 branch? Confusing. Will that continue to be the case? If it is the beta preview path which was claimed in October to be close to release why does it have so few updates? If you want us to test it, I’d expect something newer than an update once every 5 months…
You should use whichever software serves you best.
If you need the Download/Sync feature, you will only find it in Plex for Mac.
If you like a “10-foot-UI” better, use PMP.
Forget the PMP version 3.0 for now. This preview version was already released months ago, and may have had different system requirements than current PMP releases. It was a kind of a “one-off”. It was never intended for regular use.
Thanks. My confusion stems from a 3.0 update on February 26th, and the desire to have one version for my Mac. Are you saying that future versions of PMP specifically will lose the embedded web features that Plex for Mac has? Personally I like to use the web player version when I run Plex in a Window on my MacBook, and the full screen interface when I am watching my laptop in a hotel room from across the room. Going forward will neither have the other’s features?
Is PMP, both version 2.5 and the future version 3, back because people clamored for it but is having the roles between a 10 ft tall and a standard windowed interface being more clearly separated between 2 unique apps?
And therefore the Plex for Mac version number is confusing because while it is a lower number, it is because the Plex for Mac is a newer just released product that is meant to be in a separate branch and started with a 1.0 version when it came out AFTER PMP? And that is why it has higher requirements?
