Any pointers on how to best play a different version of a movie. (director’s cut v. theatrical for example.) I’ve read the knowledge base article on it, but it is geared toward movies with different resolutions and bit rates for streaming to different devices.
And the suggestion that different versions of a movie should have separate entries not only seems unsatisfying in that it clutters the interface with multiple versions, but doesn’t seem to work. I created “Movie (year).mp4” and “Movie (year) - Extended.mp4” and placed them in separate folders with the same name, but they still showed up as 1 icon with multiple versions. (Did I miss something?) Both have the same bit-rate and resolution, so they’re indistiguishable in the play version panel.
This could all be solved if the play version panel can show something like the filename or run-time, but until then, how do people reliably choose the right version to play.
Thanks for the pointer. I didn’t think of searching for “multiple cuts”.
So I guess the only reliable way to actually separate the versions is to put them in separate libraries, otherwise putting them in different folders in the same library still merges them.
I’ve added my vote to the discussion. For myself, I’d just be happy if Plex added the description text, the part between the "(year) - " and the file extension to the version selection panel.
Plex will initially merge them if they are in the same library. However you can then manually split them to have individual records for each cut/edition/version.
Personally I opted to keep them in separate libraries because I wanted to avoid cluttering my library with 3 editions of a movie showing up side-by-side. This way, the other versions/editions show up as “related items”
