I have a kinda weird question. When looking around plexamp, I noticed the music quality section and that made me get to experimenting. You see, a normal person would just set it to the best quality for wifi streaming right? Well, I don’t want to waste my phone’s battery unnecessarily. So I ask you, what is the lowest of plexamp’s quality settings, 128, 192, 256, 320 kbps, 1 mbps, 2 mbps that is still sounds good for me. Here’s my setup. I listen streaming though tidal on my pixel 6 connected via Bluetooth to my airpods pros. I don’t really listen to music, like I will just play my one playlist in the background while I work. But I still like to not hear noticeable distortion. I’m guessing the max setting is completely unnecessary and only audiophiles can tell the difference, right? Thanks.
On Bluetooth headphones, I don’t expect you’ll be able to hear any meaningful difference between high-res FLAC and opus@128.
Opus is an excellent codec.
When I select 128 kbps and I play a song, in the player is says AAC 96. Is that different to opus?
I’m not sure I understand. I am streaming from tidal, so there is no way to actually play the file.
I stand corrected. I read it as a mix use of Tidal in addition to your very own music library. Forget what I even said. I shall delete that.
So I guess I’m going with AAC 96 whatever that means. I do find it interesting that whenever I set it to 256, 192, 160, or 128 kbps it plays the song at “AAC 96”. But then when I select 320 kbps or 1 mbps it plays the song at “AAC 320”. Only on 2 mbps or maximum does the song play FLAC.
using Wi-Fi, battery usage for Tidal HiFi (shows as FLAC in Plexamp) should not be significantly/obviously different vs a lower bitrate file … a few seconds longer to prefetch the file, similar/less CPU work to decode … why worry? ![]()
anyway, Tidal generally has streaming options for HiFi (CD quality FLAC ~ 1kbps), “high” quality (320kbps), and “normal” quality (96kbps) … Plexamp streaming quality settings determine which Tidal version you get
AAC 96 is the lowest bitrate/quality available from Tidal … recommend you choose a setting for Plexamp Wi-Fi streaming quality that will give you at least AAC 320, if not HiFi/FLAC
