We want to give a worthy codec to this palyer?

in recent months plexamp has grown a lot and I congratulate you … one thing does not improve … this opus codec that recodes my flac albums … and come on …

You can always tell Plexamp not to transcode your media (in Wi-Fi or remote environments). If you have to transcode (e.g. to minimize data consumption on your mobile data plan), Opus is a rather great choice

i just don’t want any manipulation … otherwise i would use spotify

If you go to Settings – Music Quality, and set both Wi-Fi and Cellular to Maximum, does it still transcode then?

opus always encodes, it is a lossy codec

Opus is the highest quality lossy codec to use.

However, you can avoid using it by setting your quality to maximum. You may additionally have to clear cache (in settings) in case you’ve previously downloaded Opus.

I mean, if you change the settings I mentioned above, is Plexamp still transcoding your FLAC files to opus upon playback?

Because Plexamp does support FLAC direct playback. With Music Quality set to Maximum, it shouldn’t transcode to opus at all.

I just tried, and Plexamp could successfully direct play a FLAC file without any problem.

how do you say it doesn’t code? are you using a dac that tells you the bitrate of the file you are listening to?

If you enable Settings – Appearance – Player – Show Codec and Rating, it shows the info directly into Plexamp.

Also, while playing a file, you can go into the Dashboard of your server to see how exactly the file is being played. You can also use the Plex Dash app to get this info.

You’re talking about something different. If you’re on iOS or macOS, turn on Sample Rate Matching in settings.

Caveat emptor on this, Dash and the server don’t know exactly what you’re playing as the app may have pre-cached it.

I’d like to know where Plexamp stands in terms of sound quality, when compared to Audirvana, JRiver or Roon. Just in terms of sound quality, not the other bells and whistles. Is Plexamp bit perfect? Can it be configured to be bit-perfect? I’m asking since this obscurity made me look into these players again. Otherwise, I enjoy Plexamp very much.

But just read the forum, how many people are interested in quality? there are 1000 threads on background colours, playlists, downloads (let’s go back to the iPod :upside_down_face:) the few who ask for audiophile features give up almost immediately also because there are plenty of alternatives, even free ones…just see what Kodi offers

Yes but why use a lossy format when you are set up to use a lossless medium (FLAC) which already works in Plex?

I am a subscriber to tidal and qobuz do not have a real need for plexamp, it happens to be able to listen only to the files I have locally due to the poor signal coverage here plexamp would be irreplaceable

I expect Plexamp to be a high quality player because the claim is made by itself on its website: " A beautiful Plex music player for audiophiles, curators, and hipsters."

I don’t know if I count as an audiophile -I lack the ears and the funds- but I care for quality and I am curious of the quality of Plexamp, more since I mainly associate Plex with videos and Plex seems to want to overcome this by launching Plexamp.

I must add that I purchased Plex Pass just for Plexamp. Not a very big investment, but that is why I bought it. So I’ll stick around a little.

BTW, I looked into Kodi to see if I can stream from Audirvana to it (I can). It is really good

Thank you. This is really good to know. I really want to enjoy Plexamp!

Plex should put technical information like this into the website so that people can access easily. Some FAQ maybe?

So there is a possibility of bypassing the Windows audio mixer? we are talking about Plexamp right?

After some reading, I found out that I can also force sample rate matching to be “strict”. So, I turned off loudness leveling, turned off eq, turned ipad volume max, forced strict sample rate matching and voila! My Topping D10 dac shows I now get the same signal spec as the original file. I am a happy camper :relieved: Thank you for bringing this info to my attention.

I did not try this on Windows. When I connect my DAC to Windows, the os forces it to upsample to max which is unnecessary so it needs fiddling. I find it easier to use my ipad. Compromises…
