I tried looking up swedish subtitles for doctor who episodes but it doesn’t sappear for a lot of episodes or just the wrong episode is listed wheni search. So i look up on opensubtitles wich ones excist but every episode has 2 or 3 subtitles uploaded to them so i don’t understand why plex don’t see that. Is there a way for plex to find these subtitles easier?
I adjust the search terms, which sometimes helps, but there’s no config files or settings available for the search feature if that’s how you wanted to make it easier for Plex.
I rarely have success with opensubtitles.org.
To manually find a subtitle, most people switched to using subscene.com.
I like to mux the SRT I found into the video using MkvToolnixGUI more often than dropping the SRT into the film directory correctly named. I think muxing is a more professional method and is player independent.
I’m having trouble with this as well. I need subtitles for a show, and I checked opensubtitles site and the subs are there, but when I try to search for that show, every show but that one pops up and you can’t even scroll to next page. Plex needs to fix the integration.
I understand you can’t get Plex to locate the subtitle.
Here’s an easy workaround if you are the Plex Media Server admin.
Download the subtitle file off wherever is good.
They come as SRT files.
Rename and move that .srt file like the example:
/TV Shows/Bonanza/Season 02/Bonanza - s02e11.mkv
/TV Shows/Bonanza/Season 02/Bonanza - s02e11.eng.srt
Start Plex and play the episode. The subs will be there to select.
note
If the SRT you downloaded wasn’t English text, ie. eng
then name the file with the correct abbreviation, which for
Korean would be ko or for Italian would be it
/TV Shows/Bonanza/Season 02/Bonanza - s02e11.mkv
/TV Shows/Bonanza/Season 02/Bonanza - s02e11.ko.srt
Plex uses ISO-639 language codes.

Subtitle Edit is a nice tool to assist with subtitles. It can change formats, correct spelling, adjust timing, etc.
Thanks for the reply. I’m actually on someone else’s server. Is there an option they have to enable for me to upload local subtitle file?
You can upload subtitles using Plex Web (app.plex.tv/desktop).
On the movie pre-play screen, click on the current subtitle (or None). You should see an option to upload a subtitle file. Also available during playback by bringing up the Playback Settings, where you choose audio track, subtitle track, etc.

I get the “ Error attempting to import this file. please try again later.” so I’m not sure if the friend who has the server has the option enabled.
Check that the file is using UTF-8 without BOM encoding.
- Notepad ++: Displayed in lower right corner. Choose UTF-8 from Encoding menu to change.
- Windows Notepad: Displayed in lower right corner. Save As to change.
If that does not help, send the file to the server owner and ask them to add it to the system.
Note: There is no server option to enable/disable subtitle uploading. I found a few old forum posts where only the server owner could upload subtitles. It was unclear if it was a bug or if Plex does not support end-user subtitle uploads.
Besides the encoding you’re working on with FordGuy, yes I think there are ways the server admin could restrict your ability to upload. For example, the family members I’ve added to my server are run as “Managed Users,” and they can’t upload SRT files like FordGuy taught us.
My managed users see “Unable to upload subtitle file”
I’m not sure if it’s unix permissions on my NAS or what’s stopping them.
But at least you’re at the point of can’t import. ![]()
I hope that only server admins can (and should) be able to upload content to a Plex’s server. If anyone could just upload a sub, they could upload subs with names with NSFW content that might be visible to others.
agreed user uploads to my server would be strange, but then again there was that option my managed users could see.
So looking in the Plex Articles is seems that subtitles, when located thru Plex’s in-player search feature, are stored on a user by user basis, on the server, in a blob that is not user accessible or visible by other users. The articles, for one situation, mentioned that the server admin was the only one who could store a subtitle on the server through iOS or Android. There wasn’t much about the Web app.
Tried this but still no luck. I wish opensubtitles would just find the right one. It’s on there, but as soon as I type the word ‘Man to Man’ it shows everything but that in plex
What’s the log say?
