I recently purchased a WD MY CLOUD HOME because I was tired of always losing my connection to Plex when I connected via cellular. When I’m on vacation, there is no way to reset Plex on my home computer to try to get remote access working.
Anyway, after about a week for the WD to upload all my music via the WD IOS Crap, I mean “app,” I’m now finally able to access my music. I then transferred all my music videos to the WD and all the files are there. Now, when I try to Add Library in Plex, there is no longer an ability to choose the path where the files are located. Any ideas???
This is a limitation of those WD devices. You can’t create your own libraries, beside of those which are already preconfigured.
And you can’t modify their paths.
I’m placing all my music and videos in the PLEX Shared Folders. All my files are already in the Shared Music, Shared Video Folders; however, there is now no way to tell PLEX to scan those folders. Plex needs to know the path of where they are located, right?
Do the appropriate libraries already exist? (Movie, TV Shows)
If so, they should already point to those Shared folders.
All you need to do is to perform ‘Scan library files’.
Thanks for taking the time to help. Much appreciated. Plex has been a total nightmare since Day 1 [about 5 years ago].
My WDMYHOMECLOUD (“WD” is attached directly to my cable router and accessible via WIFI [and now by some miracle, LTE remotely - THAT NEVER WORKED IN THE PAST WITH AN HD Drive connected to my home computer].
Through the WD IOS app, I downloaded PLEX since that is the only way to use the WD with Plex. WD IOS app creates “Plex Shared Folders” automatically.
I then transferred all my music folders to Plex/Shared Music [I have every band in a separate folder because I prefer the old Windows nested folder system] - iTunes is worse than Plex]. I did the same with all my videos to “SHARED MOVIES”]. IF I open the WD drive on my desktop, all the music and video folders are in the PLEX folders. If I open the WD IOS app, all the music and video folders are in the proper Plex folders.
But, while Plex Server has all the Music folders and I can finally remotely listen, Plex does not find the Movies/Videos Folders in Shared Movies [despite have Plex “scan libraries”]
When setting up a Media Library in Server, Plex used to ask you the path where the files are located [Name, Path, Advanced - three separate steps]. Now, there is no second Path step to put in the correct path]. So, in Server, I have a Movies 2019 “Library” but Plex has no idea where to look for all those folders/files.
Does that make sense?
Also, the WD app really sucks. To transfer files to the WD, you need to do so in that App. You need to connect your HD to the WD and then WD recognizes that HD and asks whether you want to transfer files/folders. It will only allow you to transfer complete folders. It will not allow you to dig within a folder and only chose some of the folders. 2019 and this app doesn’t allow you to chose a folder within a folder???
Any ideas. My Music and Video libraries are about 1.5 TBs each. I really do not want to delete the Movies and reload them - WD takes about 1 week to transfer these files even though the WD is connected directly to the HD with the files.
I don’t have any personal experience with WD NAS devices. So I cannot tell you details.
But I know this: the WD is a “NAS”. It means “Network Attached Storage”. And that means you can access it over your network with your regular file manager of whatever operating system you use on your regular computer.
There should be no need to use any type of “app”.
So you attach your hard rives to your computer and then copy them over the network to your NAS device.
Naturally, this will go faster if both your computer and the NAS are connected by wire and not per WiFi.
Yes, it is a NAS, but the My Cloud Home requires access via the WD app and PLEX - it is part of the MY CLOUD HOME app.
All files were transferred via Wired LAN, not WIFI.
I can access all the files either on my desktop by opening the My Cloud Drive or using the WD app via its file explorer; but, then I have to play media via VLC or some other media player, as opposed to Plex. Plex has the files in the correct folders but won’t allow me to tell Plex where the files are to scan them in.
yes i also got one of these to mess around with and its a good device in the sense has hardware which will do plex fine for a home user… but the method to load media is rubbish
you can access the nas via the app and through the network… i get transfer speeds of 100mbs so its working fine although alot of users seem to have very slow transfer speeds which is weird
who exactly is in charge of this custom plex version which is on these wd my cloud homes? as the app is really old to and should be updated as someone must do this for WD being a custom version between plex and wd and cause of this its locked down pretty tight to what you can add and cant add when comes to media
