A year ago I installed plex on a remote computer, with an VPN connection. this solution seems to make it impossible to use remote access.
on this computer, i don’t have access to network settings, only the plex settings.
Have Plex any plans for making VPN working with VPN solutions ?
I think that VPNs generally make it impossible for Plex to work remotely but there are some people that have it working.
It is more complex than simple port forwarding that solves the issue for many with double NAT situations.
I believe that the first requirement is that you VPN must provide a fixed external IP address and that is a function of the VPN provider. With some they cannot do it and others require an extra fee for it and still others will make it happen but you have to request it and/or it requires that you use a limited subset of their VPN servers.
If I were you and wanted to make Plex work while using a VPN I would contact the VPN and ask about making Plex work. They often can provide some quite good answers and most know about Plex and what is require to make it work.
I know PureVPN and Express VPN have ways to make their VPNs, at least when installed on a router, work with Plex.
Most of the time Plex itself cannot help as the problem is actually at the VPN but the VPN support itself may be able to get you going.
Something I noticed with my VPN (I use ExpressVPN) is that if I drop it, Remote Access is perfect. If I put my VPN up, it tells me remote access is unavailable, BUT I can still connect to my server remotely using an indirect connection (that’s what Plex tells me). So, I went ahead and tunneled Plex through the VPN. Once I do that, it completely kills remote connection, AND I am unable to access my server settings. I think there are other posts on here about different services that people were able to get Plex to play nice with, so I may be shopping for a new VPN service
Honestly I’ve used airvpn for years with plex and no issues. No Ned for a dedicated ip or anything special. Just port forward the port you want and that’s it, they offer 20 port forwarding rules
