When is Linux hardware transcoding with quicksync coming back?

Server Version#: 1.18.7.2457
Player Version#: various - plex web, android plex 7.26.0.14578

For some time now (i guess mid 2019?) I have had to disable hw transcoding support. It used to work perfectly but now when hw transocding is enabled, its one blocky frame every few seconds. totally unwatchable. problem affects every video irrespective of format. the problem does not happen if hw transcoding is disabled. I have a plex pass, and bought it purely for the hw transcoding facility.

GPU is Intel uhd 600 on a j4105 celeron. Should be good for 3 simultaneous h264 encodes. Quick sync works with generic encoding tools. Plex completely annihilates the video. debug logs show VAAPI in use and status shows ‘hw’ in the transcode activity section. Have tried on different O/S - debian, ubuntu 18, 19, alpine and all have the same result.

Of a side note - could this be that there is some issue with hardware decoding and encoding at the same time? any way to turn of hw decoding but leave hw encoding place?

Have you deleted the iHD_drv_video.so driver module?
It is the known root cause of most of the problems with ApolloLake CPUs.

On Linux, it’s located in /usr/lib/plexmediaserver/lib/dri

Thank you sir, that was the quickest, easiest and most accurate forum fix I have experience in my 25+ years of internetting. And completely resolves the problem.

Also be advised: If you update again, prior to resolution of the issue, you will need repeat the deletion. Each package brings the kernel drivers with it.

I’m glad I could help.

PS: I’ve been at this some 35+ years now. I lost track of the exact date

yeah i was already ahead of you but found to my bemusement immutability doenst play well with docker. still, i know what the issue is now and thats already light years ahead of where i was a few hours ago.

35 years ago was the cusp. i was 5 years old then, and it took another 4 years before i figured out how a modem worked. Next you will be telling me you were a mindvoxer. …
