I just spun up a new Windows server … Plex Pass, Intel 10700k CPU, and Nvidia GTX 1070. Hardware settings are turned ON in Settings > Server > Transcoder.
I’m trying to play a 4k HDR video file on a Windows Plex client.
Selecting “Play Original Quality” produces a dark image with poor colors–as expected, since the Windows client cannot do tone mapping.
Selecting “Convert to 1080p HD (High) 20 Mbps” drops the resolution… but the colors and brightness remain poor, like tone mapping is not on.
Selecting “Convert to 1080p HD (Medium) 12 Mbps” or any other lower bitrate DOES fix the colors/brightness.
And strangely, this behavior varies per file. I have another 4k HDR file which does show tone mapping when transcoded via “Convert to 1080p HD (High) 20 Mbps”.
I do not know if it is meaningful, but the file which fails to show tone mapping on 1080p 20 Mbps has an average video bitrate UNDER 20 Mbps. The file which does show tone mapping on 1080p 20 Mbps has a bitrate that is much higher than 20 Mbps.
If the bitrate is the cause it would be nice if this could be remedied, because to activate tone mapping you have to drop video quality, which is too bad.
If this is expected, I will deal with it.
If it is not expected, LMK if I should file a bug with more info on the files.
