hi, i am trying to find a user manual/guide/ tutorial which guides my through the bundle of settings in plexamp.
To get answers about like:
say i want download on wifi to my phone music so i can listen ofline.
which download setting is appropriate to that feature? which bps? not streaming on 4G that’s (streaming) only at home or on wifi somewhere else.
And can i download a hole folder? (of one artist? with 10 albums.)
when i hit delete on my downloads does this ONLY dissapear on my phone and my library at home is safe?
how can i see which bps rate its downloaded?
can i say refresh with 320bps if source is high enough?
what does refresh library when open means?
only the remote view of the library or does it refresh also my downloaded files?
lots questions popping up when i skim through the plexamp app.
yes i like to have a RTFM experience before i start building my offline musiclibrary for out and about driving around and walking.
any pointers for me?
(didn’t find them detailed enough on support nor on YT.)
thanks
(i just downloaded some albums on the fly so i can see tomorrow how the app works in the autoAndroid modes)
Continuously evolving applications like Plex generally do not have a “manual” and the “help” documentation is generally not complete or up to date. It is just the price we pay for using applications that change so often.
I have always handled such applications by experimenting a lot early on and by setting specific goals and investigating how to accomplish what I want within the constraints of whatever app I am using.
In modern times I tend to mistrust apps that allow themselves to stagnate long enough for someone to write a comprehensive manual.
But I do have to say that I have yet to run into something that is possible in Plex that having a manual would help implement it or find it.
I do expect Plex, from time time, to issue documentation but by the time it gets written it is also outdated.
Personally, I find this a lame excuse. You change the code you change the documentation. They go hand in hand IMHO. It’s part of the job of a professional developer. That said, these guys don’t do this.
I’ve noted this in a now archived post but I use a multi-platform digital assets management app called Eagle and they use Trello, a third-party web app to help manage the wide range of bugs, improvements and beta testing. It’s just ridiculously wild how genuinely Plex seems so nuanced when they recently featured their “pro” UX Strategy and Researcher, Amanda S. on Pro Week 2022. I literally watched her video and gawked, eye rolled at the verbal sewage of corporate speak in her video. Theres no excuses for Plex to be so disorganized in 2022.
Trello even has restricted levels so items that can be discussed internally can do so, while topics or bug issues can be PUBLIC. It’s just insane we’re in 2022, Plex is a little over a decade old, but factually, the forum remains a distasteful wasteland of text at times.
Thanks all,
Fluid application doesn’t mean you can’t inform users what certain settings are for and what they doing.
First test in the car on Android Auto did bring some errors or strange behaviour out.
Starrating does react very very slow on my carscreen.
20 sec delay! On my phone i see instantly 5 stars but the carscreen does 20 sec before star is filled. ( not a good system either.)
Feature request would be why not have a bigger star and every tap gives one leg yellow? Star has 5 legs so full yellow star is 5 stars.
An other misbehaviour is three dots on the right. Does nothing i think.
Turned off refresh on start up to see if the delay is gone. Nope .
Does it try to connect to the main library at home?
I want a offline behaviour and only online on wifi. (i am 16 hours of the work week in the car and more then 40 hour disconnected from wifi every week so that draw al my gigs out the abbo if it’s trying to connect and sync all the time.
Musicolet was having the same car view so i assume Android Auto does this display apperance of plexamp. Right?
I will read in on the link provided by @D_eight6
See if i can fine tune the set up.
I want to use my car driving time to rate music and filter out bad sounding songs to slimeline my library. No use to keep bad songs right?
So after awile short on crossed star and delete albums which have a high list of crossed stars from the main library. Done.
Right ,
plexamp on my own phone works check
plex works on my own phone check.
A question about accounts and writability.
i made sub accounts for my kids unrestricted on “watch items” but are they complete restricted in writing? adding deleting of files i mean.
in short is only the main plex pas holder and main account fully in control with all commands?
(hate to loose some files because they didn’t know what they where doing. )
Yes. Only the server admin is able to perform any deletions, additions, modifications.
Just make sure that they are not able to accidentally switch to your user profile.
i.e. put a PIN on your account
and
be careful with the advanced server configuration “List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth”. (Because if you for instance put your whole private network in there, it only takes a client “log out” to get full admin access to your server. So don’t do that and put only certain IP addresses in there.)
can you point me to the right place to edit this?
i try to find something as Mac adress restricted (user id by device so to speak)
ok did some read in and set up a VPN connection in my nass.
installed om my phone the vpn app.
but from this point i am stuck.
not enough knowledge to understand.
seems to work with help from a friend.
Forget the VPN idea. It’s way overkill and only makes things much more complicated. I’m not even sure if it has a chance of working in general.
No Mac adress. (actually, you can tell your router to give out always the same IP to a certain Mac address. It’s called “DHCP address reservation”.)
Settings - Server - ‘Show Advanced’ - Network https://support.plex.tv/articles/200430283-network/
I would expect a sort of list of users which are approved by me to connect.
So ever other unauthorised connecter is bounced by default.
I see a list of devices connected but i can’t click on them to rename and lock as approved.
Anyway i am in the proces of reading in and learning about this kind of use.
This preference is about not requiring authentication. As such, it is not possible to disambiguate between different users – because they don’t authenticate themselves.
I did some investigation about visibility of a plex server when you open internet.
Do i get it right that you need to have a app and login in order to “find” and see the server. So sniffing a plex server is much more difficult then sniffing a router right?
I have a vpn remote acces running on my nass (no real home ip adres and a different then default port for exit so that’s also taken care off.
Next step is installing apps on my kids phones
Vpn so they arn’t screened at school wifi or Macdonalds for that matter
And plex and plexamp.
Login with my account and then switch user to there’s.
It’s al about understanding how the software of plex is designed.
I am used to kodi and local library inside my wan/lan.
So opening up routers for remote acces make’s me icky😊
(i am not experienced enough in ict web things to understand consequences of choices so i am always “better be safe and sure then sorry” when you open a port and window to the great nasty digital outside world with those hostile random worms.)
I think everything is running smooth now. Get used to the interface on mobiles and server wil be my next task.
Thanks for all the reply’s.
Does the prime and netflix stream things i can set in plexserver run on the same mobilephone app?
(that’s conabe maybe the next step in centralisation of plex in my family.)
