I can’t remember how many versions ago, but it seems the ability to “share” a movie with a user on my server has disappeared. There was a list of movies that I had suggested people watch… gone.
Has this been replaced or is this just a bug?
It’s been renamed to “Grant Access” or “Manage Library Access,” depending where you access it from.

Not sure if we are talking about the same thing. I have already “granted access” to a user. But there was a “share” menu item where I could suggest a movie to a user on my server.
The menu/action is still there – it’s called Grant Access
OK got it. Sorry for being dense. The nomenclature is bizarre and counterintuitive - granting access and recommending a movie are two entirely different things.
I have already granted access to the entire movie library, why would I need to “Grant Access…” for a single movie that is contained within it?
What the “Share…” menu item suggests is a method to recommend a movie in a library that was already accessible to a user.
It’s not a “recommendation” feature.
This is about sharing individual items (=granting access) – e.g. if you don’t want to share an entire library or if you want to share items otherwise not part of a library share (e.g. playlists).
So if you have an item in your library that someone has access to already, can you still “Grant Access” to the item to a friend, as a kind of nudge to tell them you want them to watch it? It sounds like the OP used this feature this way in the past for “Share…”. Does it work the same way now as it did before?
Same functionality, no changes.
In this case this new nomenclature is an improvement! 
I did indeed interpret the term “Share” as a way to recommend a show/movie in the past. Sort of like the functionality of the Share menu on every website and in every other application that I know.
Is there another way to suggest something to someone so that they are notified? A movie being added to a playlist might go ignored. Guess a phone call might work…
No, Plex doesn’t a recommendation feature.
There’s a number of feature suggestions asking for options to inform users about certain content.
At the moment your best shot is e.g. to create a collection with items you want to recommend and publish that as a hub on your friends’ home screen.
