Where does Plex pull the images for Screen Saver - Entertainment?

I was sitting around, watching the screen saver (Entertainment) for the plex like I always do when it is on, and yesterday, it showed a fully nude picture a movie I have (Art School Confidential).

Before yesterday, I completely thought that the background pictures that the screen saver rolled, were pulled from the actual backgrounds I have for the TV Shows / Movies, but they ARE NOT! In fact, this picture was not even in the background pictures to choose from on the Plex server! I even tried to look up this picture and could not. It was a picture of the movie, full frontal of a naked man being painted or whatever, but it is not on my Plex server anywhere.

So back to my question, where does Plex pull the screen saver images from and is there a way to make sure that nudity is not included with them?

Plex is pulling them from any library which has been pinned to the left side bar.
You might wanna review the media sources you have pinned.

That is what I thought, but that was not the case last night! lol

Here is what the server has for background images (see included screenshot)

But the image for the movie was not in this list! It was a scene where they were in an art room and 2 people were painting a nude guy.

Your own library might not be the only source which contains this movie. If you have “Movies and TV Shows on plex.tv” pinned to the side bar, it might have come from there.

The Plex’s Movies & TV Shows have never been pinned to my side bar, I always unpin them on every device. Just for the heck of it though, I spent hours scanning and through the Comedy and Romance section of the Movies & TV Shows Plex offers and I did not see it in there at all.

So not pinned and not on Plex Movies. Still very curious how that specific image was pulled since it was never on the art for that movie. This might be a huge issue, since there are kids around sometimes when the screensaver is on.

Any way to get this looked into?

For safety’s sake - Don’t unpin - Disable:

Nothing from Online Media Sources, in whole, or part - has ever shown up at my house. If Alzheimer’s sets in and I develop a craving for advertising - I can enable something in a moment.

I will try that, I will even go farther and make an entirely new category and stick that movie in it just to force it to run on the screen saver and see what happens. Might as well do my own testing right? lol

Life - is a work-around.

As a parent, you should know that…lol

Try stuff and see if it works.

I do know if I have any of that stuff enabled - it sneaks in.
That’s why it’s all disabled.

I am still waiting for an answer from the developers to my enquiry.
It might be possible that the screen saver is also using one of the video “stills” which are created from every video – even though they are otherwise overridden by “proper” wallpaper or poster art.

I am thinking that it did take a screenshot of the video, that is the only way this could have happened unless Plex uses some hidden stock of photos. (which could also be the case, since maybe the Plex itself takes a random screenshot of the movies just incase it cant pull images from the web maybe??)

if that is the case, maybe there is a fix for this. who knows. just dont want to have to disable this amazing feature. love this screen saver and searching through these forums i found a few more posts of people who love it too and were told to simply ‘disable’ the screensaver, but we dont want too! lol

That’s exactly what happens for every video. But if proper artwork is available for that movie or show it will replace that still shot.

Stupid question:
Did you scroll all the way to the bottom in the Edit dialog, both for Poster and Background?
The last item in both should be the automatic still picture.

Yes I did, in my last screenshot it shows every picture the plex says it has. the image shown on the screen saver was not on there. i will take 2 more screenshots:

to be honest, i dont think the still screenshot that plex did for the video shows up in this movies database or whatever. is there anyway to force it to show me the screenshot it took or a way to purge the screenshots plex takes?

Hm, curious.
Which metadata agent was used to match this movie?
(you can find out by taking a look at the movie’s Plex XML info. The property guid="... will contain the metadata source.)

I hope this is what I am looking for, however I do not see a specific agent name…

here is an image of the above metadata if it makes it easier

this one might be it maybe

This tells us that this library is already using the new “Plex Movie” scanner and agent.

I was kinda expecting to find a reference to the old legacy agents in there.
Because with the newer agents you should also find the still image among the wallpapers.
Is this a newly added movie?
Or perhaps one which is already for a long time in this library?
For some reason the still image is missing and I don’t know why.

Nope, not a new add, it was added on Nov 25th, 2020. I recently refreshed all the metadata probably though, so that would have updated it to the new Movie scanner right? Or maybe the movie scanner was being used last year.

A typical add to my Plex media server would be around 100-300+ movies at one time, copied over to server in groups of 10. I try to wait until all 10 don’t have the loading symbol anymore (i believe that is when it is done pulling data right?) and then load 10 more.

Sometimes I copy over 30 or 40 movies at a time if I get impatient, but I try to do only 10 at a time.

It shouldn’t play a role whether you add only 10, or 300 at a time.

But maybe it was the conversion of the library from one of the legacy agent to plex Movie which caused the loss of the still image.

Can you check a movie which you added only recently, whether it has the still image present for selection in poster and wallpaper?
