Which gen Intel processor for transcoding

Hi,
I have recently set up a 7th gen Intel i7 NUC as my plex server. I primarily use my Chromecast tv as the player.
While this processor is able to stream files my previous 4th gen server was not able to, it’s not powerful enough to transcode when enabling English ASS subtitles and fails.

All hardware requirements listed for plex mention i3, i5, i7, but not which gen.

Is there a certain gen which would transcode better? I don’t believe I would need hardware accelerated graphics enabled for Intel integrated graphics but I could be wrong.

It may be a better solution to invest in a better player that wouldn’t require transcoding, but my current goal is a small always-on device to use with my Chromecast TV

Thankyou in advance!

I can’t answer this fully but my 4790k i7 from 2014 did perfectly fine and it’s a 4th gen from 2014. I currently run a 10700k iirc and it works great too. Any i7 will be more than plenty just stay from Pentium and Celeron if you can. I’ve heard of issues but I don’t think many use them still.

I used to have that cpu in my old desktop and it worked fine. I’m currently using i7-7567u and it is unable to transcode with ASS subtitles. Maybe it’s something to do with the mobile processor in the NUC

File type is h264 mkv. I’m assuming direct play is why it normally works but as soon as selecting the subtitles it says my server isn’t powerful enough.

Looks like the culprit was “Burn Subtitles” setting. Once Changing it from automatic to only image formats, it can play subtitles without issue

Mobile processors in general are horrid, especially Intel mobiles. Typically they hold the new name designation but they also run a few generations behind in terms of computing power too. If it’s a mobile is hands down ditch it for a desktop. Usually we stream 2-3 devices at a time sometimes transcoding at least 2. Although 4k vids are setup in their own folder as we only have my 4k tv and my 4k computer monitor. Transcoding 4k is rough, I can do it but only 1 stream at a time period.

Oh wow, that’s surprising! I didn’t know that was a feature either. Usually I convert using handbrake or the like to rip so typically most direct plays for me. I don’t really need with subtitles though. I’m glad you figured it out!

I just spent all this time modding my NUC to fix it’s overheating issue and was worried it wasn’t gonna be able to transcode now lol thank God

I’m not going to lie… I’m an Intel guy but damn is that gorgeous. Currently I use my desktop to do this. I ran Ethernet between our room and the living room because wifi doesn’t reach. I have all the things to start my structured media panel now so it’s just a time game. Once I do that I’ll be venturing into an NAS or possibly NUC for now I’m jealous :joy:

I would suggest a NUC over a NAS tbh. Better to go a proper low power PC then a NAS. I feel that NAS are very overpriced and don’t have enough power. If you install plex on the SSD you can store your media on some red drives in an external enclosure. USB works fine. You would have to spend a lot on a decent NAS.

This is still an Intel NUC. It had an overheating issue which is why I got it for free. I just cut a hole in the top and then cut and soldered the desktop cpu fan header to the NUC cpu fan header. The shape of this AMD wraith prism was just ideal for the NUC and glued on easy. I added a dust filter underneath and the fan blows directly onto the heatsink (original fan removed).

I for one won’t be buying an NAS. I build all my rigs custom. I’ve been looking to fill the slot with possibly an i9 or i7 maybe AMD but I think their lead ahead wont be for much longer although I do really hope it is. I’ve loved them from the beginning. I wanted to do an NAS because I host about 14TB currently total between all devices in the house with the exception of kid blocked content. As far as the overheating it works!! I love it!!

Yea I’ve built all my desktops custom but in terms of a device I want running 24/7 for storage as well as the ability to run plex server, I went with the NUC cos it’s tiny and uses 19v65w psu. 14TB would be pretty hefty to connect Unless you just got a basic NAS purely for file sharing

Currently I am running my storage off of my desktop in my room. I will agree that those are nice specs processor wise with that machine! I have a 10Tb Seagate exos drive in one slot, a basic 4Tb platter drive (nothing enterprise like the exos) and then I run (for now, crucial ssds suck btw) a crucial mx500 2Tb. The exos and other drive is what’s shared. We also link mine and my wife’s computer in a way where we can drop files into a folder and I’ll get an alert on my desktop. My desktop does currently run 24/7 too. Been doing that since 2014.
