Hello! I’m thinking on buying NAS device.
It’s solely for home use.
Basically only for basic data backup and PLEX.
I’m on a tight budget so here are two models I’m considering.
I’m sure both of them are sufficient for my storage needs.
The question is which one will be better for PLEX:
I don’t have experience with either but suggest looking into unraid I think you could build a unraid server for around the same price that would allow you to expand the number of drives in the future.
Thanks. I already have one “trial” DIY NAS based on OMV with PLEX. But it’s on ~15 yrs old Dell PC laying around. I’m a bit concerned about it’s performance and power efficiency.
That’s why I was thinking on something more dedicated.
But - if I’d decide to go that way - how NAS platform should differ from regular PC in terms of hardware characteristics? I guess power supply and motherboard are most crucial.
How CHEAP can I go?
A lot will depend on how many streams you’ll expect to have running at any time, what type of files (4k HDR etc) and if the devices you are using for players need transcoding. I am running a 8 year old i5 and often have 3 streams going at the same time to Rokus and Shield with no problems.
