Which way to do Itunes Integration

I am running Plex on a Synology DS918+ NAS. I have noticed that there is a Synology App for running Itunes Server.

I also notice that Plex has a radio button under settings/plugins - “enable itunes plugin”

So, I see a couple of ways of doing this - I still want to have access to everything via Plex, but also want music and video retrievable via itunes.

Of course, all of this is so that I can then use my Series of Amazon Alexas around the house to play music out of the Itunes Library

Option 1. My existing plex music etc. is at /var/services/homes/plex/music (and so on for movies). I can set up the Synology Itunes server (I think) to point to there for music, and similar for movies(). In theory, I can play my music via Plex, Or Itunes, and I believe you can set up Amazon music to read from a Itunes Libary

It’s not clear how or if the Synology Itunes Server separates movies from TV Shows etc, but I shall go check that with them.

Option 2 - click the plex “enable itunes plugin” - what does this do? I am presuming that it perhaps turns on an itunes server within plex?
But there is little to no information on that… In theory, if that is the case, then I can also point my Amazon Music to it.

Are there reasons why one of these options might be better than the other?

That’s one thing plex lacks is documentation. I’ve always wondered what the itunes option was myself. Doesn’t really add up to those of us not using windows cause there is no itunes path on our servers.

This isn’t going to be to anyone’s liking but:

  1. Synology’s iTunes server ---- meh, lackluster at best
  2. iTunes on Linux (DSM) won’t work. A ninja and I tried to force it by faking Windows pathnames. It was VERY ugly.

iTunes is meant for Windows platforms. Linux was never supported.

No, there is no separate server. It just allows your current PMS to access iTunes running on that same computer. As Chuck mentioned, iTunes doesn’t run on Linux so you are faking it. You need to copy all your iTunes stuff from where it is running (Windows or Mac) and copy it to your Synology then point PMS to look in that location. PMS will treat this as a regular Plex music library and try to import any dumb playlists you have. This is a one-time thing and there is no integration with iTunes.
