Hi there, I use HDHomeruns and Xteve tuner for IPTV. I use Ubuntu Desktop as the Plex VM OS. One thing I cannot figure out for the life of me is seeing “Recording failed” while watching live TV. I have a friend added to Plex home who lives off network with a separate account. He is set to live TV only under restrictions and also sees the same error. This error message pops up every 45min to 1 hour. This message is seen watching from the HDHomerun or xteve tuner so any channel. Also device doesn’t matter, this issue is seen from from Rokus, browsers and chrome casts.

To combat this, I have set the Transcoder Temporary directory to /tmp/mydirectoryname. I have given this directory 777 permissions. I have this writing to the Plex OS which is a SSD. With 50gb available. I tried the Transcoder Temporary directory set to /dev/shm for a time, but that resulted the same. Last thing is that regular DVR recordings complete without fail.

Usually, in my experience, that means the OTA signal is not great for that channel. I have several stations that depending on the time of day or weather will fail to record.

Since this is linux, maybe when watching live tv the dvr records to a directory I don’t have correct permissions on? Does anybody know the default directory where live tv DVR’s to?

While we wait for a reply, I found this tidbit on a reddit thread:

“If you are not recording, the stream will be stored in your Transcoder temporary directory which can be changed in your server settings. If you are watching a show you are recording, it is stored in the .grab folder of the library location for the recording, i.e. TV Shows or Movies.”

I checked my Transcoder temp directory /tmp/plexbuffer, I noticed that I do have a session popup under here when I watch live tv: /tmp/plexbuffer/Transcode/Sessions. I went ahead and did a sudo chmod -R a+rwx on /Sessions. I will see if this makes any difference.

If there is anybody watching, I think this is many issues.

-I have had too much faith in my IPTV provider. I think I may have a cheaper one, so their streams aren’t always so stable. I found this out when I was streaming 1 channel on 2 devices, both ended at the same time.
-The only way to explain OTA channels is maybe the antenna may disrupt the connection, causing the channel to cut and then to receive the ‘recording has failed’ message.

IPTV isn’t supported by Plex so figuring that out is all you.

Depending on how many streams you have going 50 GB may not be enough.
