White line flickering across my screen

Server Version#: 1.40.2.8395
Player Version#: 8.34

Hi all, I’m not sure if this is a known issue with Plex so any help would be much appreciated!

Every now and then, between every 30 minutes and every 5 hours, I get a white line about 40-50 pixels tall flickering across the entire width of my screen when watching media through Plex. It lasts a couple of frames, then disappears again.

I’ve found two references to it:

  1. Reddit - Dive into anything
  2. Plex Playback : White flash / White Line across the top of screen | AVS Forum

Is this a known bug? I’m not sure if it could potentially be an issue with my TV - although saying that, it only seems to happen on Plex.

I’m using a Fire Stick 4K Max streaming from a Windows server, if that helps

Many thanks

Did you try the fix that’s in that 3 year old reddit post? "
I unintentionally solved this issue while trying to solve another unrelated issue. My desktop power settings somehow got changed to “Balanced”… I switched it over to performance mode and no more issues!"

My PC is already set to High Performance, but no luck unfortunately!

Any correlation to the media and/or if it’s being transcoded?

No correlation at all sadly - it happens on direct play as well as when being transcoded :frowning:

Any correlation to the media type? Colorspace, bitrate? How far in to a title it’s playing? Is it ever repeatable?

No correlation to media type - it happens on a 1080p Seinfeld episode in SDR as well as a 4k John Wick film in HDR. It can be 2 minutes into a title or 2 hours in, and not something I can reproduce - if I rewind 10 seconds and then play it back, the band/line/stripe doesn’t appear at the same point.

Try another hdmi input on the tv.

I’ve tried two different HDMI ports, but the issue remains - it also doesn’t occur in Netflix or Prime Video; it’s localised to Plex.

Do you have another streamer to test? To narrow it down to the server or player side? Built in tv app at least?

I used the TV’s built in Plex app for a while and never had this occur - I’m not sure if this helps at all?

Ok, then that would suggest at least, it’s not server or media related. It could be a bug in the player version, a bug in the player firmware, maybe a bad hdmi cable from the player, etc.

I’ve narrowed it down to being a bug in the player, there’s no doubt about that - but I don’t know if this is a known bug, if other people are experiencing it but haven’t reported it, or if there’s a fix in the works.

I would try a factory reset and full update. I would think if it was any kind of issue there would be a lot of others complaining.

I’ve just tried this, but still no luck unfortunately - it occurred within about 20 minutes this time.

Does anyone have any advice on this please?

Bump?
