Trying to install the newest version of Plex server on my WHS2011 server. Found a few very old posts saying it must be installed as a service and pointing to some old links to download a couple windows files. Has an easier solution been found yet for WHS2011 installs?

I don’t know of any reason that Plex “needs” to be installed as a service on WHS 2011 (edit: except perhaps that it’s not possible to have a user auto-log in to the OS). Plex doesn’t actually support this directly. However, even if not required, most people using Plex on a server actually do prefer it to be run as a service. You can use the community app PMS as a Service to do this.
BTW, WHS 2011 is based on Windows Server 2008 R2, which is a Windows 7-era OS. Mainstream support from Microsoft actually ended for this product in 2016. Plex should run fine as long as Plex supports Windows 7 though.
I would definitely recommend Windows 10 over WHS2011 unless you really need the server features purely based on the level of integration with modern hardware if that’s what your using.
