I just installed Plex on my home server and Google Chromecast today and it was working well. But it was buffering with larger files, so I turned off the wireless connection from the server and instead used an ethernet cable. Now my library doesn’t appear on the client side.
How can I troubleshoot this? Thank you.
Server Version#: 1.22.3.4392
Player Version#: I couldn’t find this. It’s on Google Chromecast
Sounds like your wired and wireless connections might end up in separate subnets of your home network. Plex does not discover clients/servers across those boundaries unless specifically configured that way.
Ah, this sounds likely. Thank you. Now, how can I resolve this? I poked around in the network settings page in Plex and didn’t see anything that looked like it related to this. Any tips on where to start?
On the Plex side there’s a feature in Settings > [Server Name] > Network > LAN network – however this requires a Plex Pass membership.
Unless you need those different subnets for LAN / WLAN you might be able to configure your router to treat them as the same (e.g. if your WLAN is running through a separate Access Point → configure it into bridge mode so it doesn’t establish its own network)
Thank you for your help. I plugged my IP address into that box and I’m in business. It works flawlessly. I did buy a membership, though are you sure I need it? I believe I saw that box there before I upgraded. In any case, thanks.
Very few people will need to set or change this preference. It simply lets you specify which IP addresses or networks will be considered to be “local” to you. If you set any bandwidth limits under Remote Access, those do not apply to “local” playback and only take effect for remote playback. By default, only the network subnet on which the server is located is considered to be “local” (which is appropriate for the vast majority of users).
Tip! : This feature requires an active Plex Pass subscription for the Plex Media Server admin Plex account. Addresses can be specified either as an individual IP address or a range (using IP/netmasks). Do not include spaces or tabs.
So I take it the field is displayed anyway but will only be applied with an active Plex Pass.
