I’ve been using Plex on my Xbox One for some time now and for as long as I can remember I have had “Automatically Sign In” enabled so I don’t have to select the user on launch. Suddenly last night it completely signed me out and I had to re-link it to my account and now the option to automatically sign in is gone.
Were you using a managed user at the time? The automatic sign in option was designed only for the admin to be able to set. It was mistakenly shown in the previous version for managed users as well. This was fixed and only the admin account will have that option visible.
It worked for managed users before though didn’t it? Why can’t managed users also use the feature?
Yes I was using it for a managed user. Why was this removed? It’s a really useful feature and makes using Plex harder for my family.
It’s a client wide feature. The idea is that manages users should not be able to enable/disable the feature, only the admin. Once enabled by the admin, it will apply to all users. Then only the admin can turn it off.
Ah I see, that does seem to work. Totally undiscoverable IMO. The previous way made much more sense.
Sure, having it everywhere makes it easier to find. But imagine this scenario. You as the admin had the feature turned off so that others could not use your admin account. Some one else switched to their managed user account and then enables the feature. Next time, you use the app, you switch to your admin and enter your PIN. Then you close the app. Now someone else opens the app, it will load into your admin account and they will have full access.
With the feature as it is you’ve put me in that situation. I’ve had to enable automatic sign-in because I want it to automatically use the family user (people using the xbox get confused by the users and don’t always choose the correct one). So now if I do as you say and switch to my admin user it will continue to use that going forwards. Thankfully this is not such a big deal for me, I never switch to the admin user on the xbox, but I’d sure be surprised to find it starting automatically signing in to that user going forwards.
The way I’ve always assumed this setting works is that whenever Plex starts it signs in to the user with auto sign-in turned on. Turning it on for a user turns it off for others. This way you always get to the user you expect when starting plex. An alternative which is slightly more annoying but also resolves the security issue would be to just clear auto sign-in when switching users.
