When my Internet goes down, I am only able to watch movies from my Plex server from the server holding the movies and running Plex. Why can I not watch my movies from any device in my house, such as other laptops, when the Internet goes down, yet all of my devices can see each other just fine on my LAN.
It takes a little up-front preparation.
Another useful walkthrough:
I have lots of complaints about Plex but being able to watch when the internet is down is not one of them.
I simply make sure that insecure connections are allowed on the server and all devices and I do NOT use Plex.TV to validate my connection.
I believe Plex should have an “Allow local streaming without internet” setting so that people do not have to figure it out on their own but Plex does work quite well without internet.
I imagine that Plex is not really interested in making it easy for people to use their software without internet as that would mean some loss of control/income for Plex. So do not expect it to be made simple, just be happy it can be done at all.
