Why Do Movies Play on Desktop Without Subscription?

Hello,

I do not currently have a Plex subscription (Plex Pass or Remote Pass), and yet I am able to watch movies on my desktop computer at work, while my Plex server is at home. Does anybody know why? Also, a friend of mine was able to watch an entire movie from my shared library on his AppleTV a few days ago, and neither of us have a paid Plex subscription.

From Important 2025 Plex Updates | Plex:

Which Plex apps/platforms will be affected by this remote streaming change?

The changes and limitation to remote streaming of personal content will affect users of apps that offer our new Plex experience (once they’re released). In the short term, platforms running an app that has not yet received an update to our new experience will not be affected. It’s possible that future system changes may affect even users who have not updated to an app offering our new Plex experience.

Only the mobile apps have the “new Plex experience” currently (though some other platforms are in beta), so for now it’s still free on other platforms.

Thanks for the info.
