Remote Access disabled, but Plex still requires a subscription to stream locally

I don’t have a need to stream outside of my home so I’ve had Remote Access disabled.

I am aware that Plex decided remote streaming now costs money, but this doesn’t affect me as I never use Plex remotely… or so I thought.

A few days ago I went to stream on my laptop via the web interface and was met with a pop up telling me I needed to subscribe to watch outside the home. I know. I’m at home. Plex refused to stream.

Surely, by definition, “remote access” being disabled means that Plex shouldn’t be trying to up-sell you to remote streaming?

The weirdest bit is that the Plex app on my Apple TV has no problem streaming, it’s just the web client.

Any ideas? Plex doesn’t do support, as their support team has made clear. Any workarounds for the bugs in their remote play detection? Any tips for migrating to alternatives?

We’ve collected some common reasons why Plex would see a connection as “remote”: Client says it won't play from "remote server", although the server is local
