Why does original quality choose the 4k version over the 1080p on 1080p TV?

Exactly as the title reads. I have a 1080 and 4k version of every 4k movie, for family members that do not own 4k. So they do not transcode. But unless they choose play version… It plays and transcodes every time. Why is this? Plex knows the 4k file and the 1080p file is there…

Yes, a better implementation would be original/best matching, when there are multiple resolutions/qualities available.

Another person in this forum organized his libraries into Movies and Movies 3D. He didn’t want to share the 3D movies to others as they didn’t have the equipment to watch them. This workaround could work for your 4k stuff as well.

Plex is designed to allow the client to make the selection instead of the server forcing a selection. I’ve had the best luck by having a separate library that I share with my friends that has 1080p files with a small-ish bitrate and AAC audio, which nearly always plays without transcoding.

This is how I have mine setup with Movies and Movies 3D as well as Movies 4k…
For that exact reason… hell, might have even been me you are referring to.(although I am not the only one doing this for sure)
