Why does Plex drop dashes in my titles

I have a large number of music videos in which the file names are in the format: Artist - song title - Venue or other info (date) , sometimes just: Artist - song title (date) . Plex always drops the dashes so that the Artist and song title blend together often making the title difficult to understand. I have the same issue with other videos and photos as well. These are files that Metadata is not available from the Internet (i.e. not TV shows or Movies). Is there another way to name these files? I really prefer the space dash space format in the file names.

Another issue is keeping upper case letters that are not the leading character. UFO becomes Ufo. Any way to maintain upper case?

hi, do you know about mp3 tagging (ID3v1 or ID3v2)? What happens is plex uses the mp3 tag info instead of the filename to show it in the library. On windows I use Mp3tag (from germany) to organize the albums info for the music library. Its pretty quick once you get the hang.

ps. linux also has a decent prog but I forget the name.

It details the naming conventions that Plex expects for music libraries. I’ve never added a music library but after I changed my Movie and TV content to the Plex Naming Conventions, Plex was much happier.

Thanks for the replies.

My MP3 files are working fine with the exception of Plex using Album Artist instead of Artist but I don’t really use Plex for audio as I have other options.

My issue is with MP4 files. These are videos and not audio files. They are single-song files (think MTV from the old days) and not concerts, those are working fine as I use a different naming convention.

MP3tag works well for MP3 files and supposedly works with MP4s but I’ve not had good luck with it. I suppose I could edit the file properties in the details tab but that is cumbersome. I’m nearing 3000 single-video files.

BTW - I use the Other Video category to add these files as there is no Metadata.

You can conduct an experiment:
Embed your correct title into the ‘Title’ metatag of the mp4 file.
then Plex Dance the file.

There is software which can take the file’s name and embed it in full (or just parts of it) into the meta tags.
(e.g. for Windows I recommend mp3tag )
