Why do we download the program when it jus sends us back to the internet
The web app is just an interface which loads into memory. the local content if you have a server installed is from your local server. You content does not go out to the internet somewhere and back to your house to watch.
If you share your server or plan to access to remotely. remembering app.plex.tv or going to our website and hitting launch is generally easier to remember than an ip address. You can use the IP if you want though.
So the program on my pc does nothing rly?
The program is the Plex Media Server which serves content. It serves content to Plex players. The web app in browser is one of the many different players we make
The Plex Media Server on your computer manages and categorizes your media files on your computer.
When you hit play on whichever one of the Plex player apps you choose to use, the server streams that media file to the player when the player requests it. If you stop in the middle of the movie the the server on your computer remembers where you left off. If you family members all make free accounts and you decide to share your server with them it remembers what each individual persons account is watching.
If you decide you want access your server when you are on the other side of the planet, you can set up remote access (which is free). You can access your server on your computer though a Plex player app. The “Plex Web app” is a player app in a browser, There are other apps for other devices like iPhone, Android, Roku.
When you go to app.plex.tv the interface loads the Plex Web app from an online source into browser memory for that session. However the the content in it, like your movies, photos, music (media files) are on your computer which the Plex Media Server on your computer is serving.
