Plex media server and plex app, is there any difference.
Why on the plex website there are two downlods for window, plex media server and plex app, is there some explanation.
What interests me is that my laptop be my server and I watch on TV what is on the laptop and that’s it.
Does anyone have a logical explanation.
Thank you
D.
plex is not a regular media player.
plex is designed as client/server.
plex PLAYER connects to plex SERVER.
the SERVER indexes and serves your media to multiple PLAYERS.
you must have both to have a fully functioning plex system
Plexweb - the server app, does have a player in it. Plexweb runs in your browser. Your browser, along with everyone else’s browser, sucks at video playback - 'cause it’s your browser.
Plex for Windows/Mac
or
Plex Media Player
are Two powerful Player apps. They will basically Direct Play anything you throw at them, while your browser will likely transcode everything you throw at it.
I know which one I drag to the TV and it’s NOT Plexweb.
PMP is here:
PMP has more powerful features, the settings of which are available only in TV View. Once set, they’ll work in any view. TV View rocks on the TV (as you might imagine) if you have a 10’ Remote system - or don’t mind using the phone app to control it.<—or the laptop from which it came.
Most people will find Plex For Windows/Mac suitable for their needs, but you can run both to pick the best weapon if a situation calls for it. <— there is no situation, other than that of immediacy, or lost in the desert with a great Wi-Fi Signal, that would facilitate Plexweb’s use as a player to watch something on. <—at my house.
There are 2 icons on my desktop,
One is just ‘Plex’ the other says ‘Plex media server’
And when i click on the media server icon absolutely not open and the plex icon opens the plex interface.
And that is not clear to me.
these two are a mystery to me.
Thank you
Plex Media Server opens Plexweb - or tries to start PMS - that is already running (probably).
(right clicking the system tray icon and selecting: Open Plex - is the more popular method)
“Plex” is Plex for Windows/Mac - and the one you should drag to the TV.
(Yes, it absolutely should be called what it is)
you need to setup/configure the SERVER before the player will do much other than the free plex media (podcasts/news/webshows/ad-supported tv/movies).
did you read the 'what is plex? link above?
did you read the
https://support.plex.tv/articles/categories/intro-to-plex/
Plex Media Server is the application that controls the media and serves it to the players.
Plex for Window and Mac are player apps. There are other player apps such as Plex in the Android, iOS, Roku, Apple TV, Playstation and other app stores. When you hit play they are making a request to the server to send them the stream of whatever you are tying to play.
Because it is a background app that is meant to alway be running so it is ready to server to whatever player app a person might be using that has an available Plex player app
So, if I understand correctly, I should only use Plex icon and in that setup libery.
Is that right
No, you should use Plexweb to set the server up, but technically either could be used I guess.
The thing is - you need to have a server, it needs to have libraries, your media needs to be in those libraries - then you can worry about what to watch it all on.
Something like Plex For Windows/Mac would be nice.
This may help understand it’s complexities in this video:
setup the library via Plex Web
once your libraries are created (separate tv, movies, music) and content scanned, then you can use any of the plex clients, on computer/mac, or mobile/tablet devices, streaming devices, tv’s, etc.
Thanks a lot everyone, I understand a little better though I still have questions, but so much for now
Would anyone be so kind as to teach me how to enable remote access, since now shows me this,
Your server is signed in to Plex, but is not reachable from outside your network.
My router is Asus RT-AC68P,
If anyone can help me I will be very grateful.
Thank you
Daniel
@BigWheel can take it from here - and also split that Asus config request to a new thread.
The last one took a few weeks and was really exhausting…lol
I tried to follow the instructions but it fails,
I’m sending two pictures of what it looks like to me so if you can help me with what you see
You need to have the internal port which is 32400.
I put it but it doesn’t work
It seems a little complicated so I’ll try to figure it out on my own unless you have an idea
