For quite a few years now I’ve run Plex without issues but recently I’ve been having more and more issues with the PHT client under OSX just stopping (on multiple machines) … no crash dump normally it just exits.
This has come to a head this evening with one of the Macs will not currently run for more than a couple of minutes without bombing out with no error. Hence I tried reinstalling the software but it has taken several attempts for it to just get through the initial configuration wizard. And then it crashed just scrolling through the sections not even getting as far as allowing me into a library to play anything.
But then randomly, after a couple more restarts it seems to work … but there is obviously some issue here which is causing this as the problem keeps coming back.
From past experience I have seen that it is more stable if the message about remote communication server failing to start is displayed when PHT is started but this that is not helping.
I’ve covered a log covering one of the crashes. One of the messages I have noticed in previous logs is multiple entries for “curl failed with socket error” but the ip and port look correct and the server is listening on the port.
(and before someone says to just run the new client I’ll point out that a horizontal scrolling interface (with no wrap) is unworkable if you have TV shows with a large number of episodes).
Unfortunately PHT is no longer supported by Plex. That said you do have a few great options to move forward! You can switch to the new Plex Media Player which is currently in preview exclusively for Plex Pass members. It’ll support all the cool formats that PHT supported and is under active development! It will run on all the usual hardware _including_ a select few embedded clients! As @NedtheNerd mentioned you could also move to the community-run OpenPHT.

I believe the OP said he specifically didn’t want anyone to suggest he move to PMP!

Have you tried OpenPHT?

To be honest I hadn’t heard of it! Installing on one of the Mac minis which was having issues and constant crashes and it seems to be working at the moment.

As i said I have issues with PMP. If you have a TV series with a large number of episodes (due to be a long running series with weekly episodes) then the horizontal navigation model does not work. With PHT you could just go up in the episode list and it wrapped to the end straight away which was fine. And of course there are other issues (like the changes in remote button mapping which defies all logic).

He did! But PHT isn’t supported anymore so sadly I couldn’t recommend he stay with that or offer an support. I offered the official solution and the community solution, both of which are great picks!
