Even without any activity, Plex is uploading data somewhere like mad. Why is this happening? I use Plex specifically for remote access without having to punch holes in my router, but if it’s going to just chew up my bandwidth for no reason there’s not much use in having it!
Does the dashboard only show data use for content being playing and not data used for content being synced? Looking at the individual user data usage there’s no indication that anyone is doing anything.
Where would I look in the server logs, and what am I looking for? Do I need to enable Debug or Verbose logging? I looked in the ‘com.plexapp.system.log’ and the ‘Plex Media Server.log’, but I don’t se anything indicating that something is being synced. There are an awful lot of log files to sift through.
It shows all data not just playback. If the server needs to ping a local client to see if it is there it will show for example.
Do not enable verbose. Debug should be enabled by default. You should see things lines that include GET /sync/transcodeQueue in them during the transfer. In console you should be able to just filter on sync. if that is what it is.
Ah ha, yep found it. It was a remote device syncing.
Re: my question about the dashboard showing data. I was referring to (although I didn’t say this) the data displayed for each user, which is what brought up the question in the first place. The bandwidth meter clearly showed that something was accessing data from my server, but looking at the ‘Play History’ chart the only think that showed was 34 min of music playback, which I know to have been me at the gym earlier in the day, which didn’t explain the several hundred MB of data it had uploaded. It turned out to be a family member’s phone downloading stuff.
Thanks for the help! Is it planned / possible for the dashboard to show sync data for users as well as just play history?
I am also seeing this and would love for remote sync to show up, not only show up but what user and which device it is syncing to. It is a little worrisome some to see data in use but not knowing why
is anyone aware of a feature request or any work being done on syncing that would tell who is syncing and on what device this is happening? Currently I have noway to see this information other than parsing logs, I don’t believe this is acceptable, especially with security being or should being important to plex (as a company) and the individual using plex (server owner?)
(I really don’t like not knowing what is going on on my server especially remote data)
