Why Plex server will upload my videos and movies without any notification?[resolved]

Server Version#:1.18.5.2309 pn a Synology devices
Player Version#: IOS player

Hi all, I am wondering why the Plex server will upload my content without any notification?

I setup the plex server in a synology, and everything looks good after that and I can play the videos even away from home, until this evening. I have a very busy job, so I only used this webex several time, totally not more than 10 hours after the server is done, and I can only use it once 1 week or around.

But today, I checked my router’s data traffiic log, and I found the plex server already uploaded 6TB data after it is setup, and still uploadting. But I haven’t use this software (my IOS player) for 1 weeks. From the history log, I can it uploaded every day at around ~300GB, and for this week, around 1 TB is uploaded.

Before this thread, I can still see the upload is being done at the rate of 2MB/s.

So I checked and I found the traffic is related to the MAC of the Synology devices. So I disabled the PLEX server and the upload rate is down to less 100KB now, which is normal to me. I will monitor overnight with the server off.

So my question is:

  1. Why my PLEX server will upload so much data without telling the user?? Is it normal? Is it safe?
  2. What is those update for?

Thanks for your comment.

Here is the pictures. The blue curve is the the uploading data.
We can see the massive data uploading happened in the 2am to 5am, secretly… . my synolgy will restart at 4am every day, so we can see a data rate drop at around 4am… This is proving the traffic is related to the synology as well. And my sylonogy already worked for more than 1 year, and from the log, I found this massive uploading happend at day one after my plex server is installed. …

And we can also see it is being done every day.

to see what the server is doing you can check Plex Web then click the wrench in the top right, and then choose ‘dashboard’ from the left side menu.

this will indicate any active streaming users. if there is anyone you don’t know streaming, you can end the stream, and then go to the ‘authorized devices’ near the top of the left menu to review any devices which are logged into your plex account, or the ‘manage library access’ to view any users to which you have shared your server media with.

if all of that looks correct, you can check the ‘console’ section (bottom left of settings menu), this will display an easier to read portion of the server log, perhaps the server is updating metadata or whatever tasks.

if you want to read the raw logs (more difficult to read), you can download the full logs from the troubleshooting section next to the console link.

If you go to the scheduled tasks sections in the server settings you can see a full list of what your server is doing.

Yes, 2 am to 5 am is the default time for these tasks to take place. You can change that or choose which of those tasks you would like to do or not do by unchecking the selection.
I would not suggest you change anything if your server seems to be functioning correctly otherwise

Other points which must be considered here in Scheduled Tasks are:

  1. Refresh local metadata during maintenance.
  2. Refresh library metadata periodically (it will also rematch)
  3. Analyze and tag photos – this will upload the photo for analysis and tagging if enabled. It will be immediately deleted upon completion.

JaysPlex7, Yes you are right! I can see the same setting in the PLEX server config page.

I unchecked all the items and today I don’t have the massive upload again today! Everything is back to normal.

Now I know what is happening. If you are interested, I can explain:

For cost and security considering issue, my Synology is working as PLEX server only, and my movies are stored in another OMV NAS via network and shared via SMB. So the PLEX server will need to read the movies every update to do maintenance. That’s the reason I can see a lot of traffic during the early morning.

If your movies storage and PLEX server are in the same device, then you won’t see such network traffic and you will not see such issue.

Thanks for everyone who replied this thread.

Thanks ChuckPa. I will check the items carefully and select only the items I need.

For the item 3 you mentioned, are you saying the photos will be upload to somewhere in the internet?

Yes.

One of the servers at plex does photo tagging / identification for you if you have it enabled.

I see. I will be careful when using the photo tagging/identification functions!

Thank you very much!!
