Huge disappointment. Plex is unusable. I buy a Shield for that. Fortunately I discovered Kodi, Kodi although very ugly and impractical but it works.
I feel the same way about all the clients. That’s why I use this:

Plex uses the media player that the Nvidia Shield TV supplies and is limited by what codecs the support and how well. There are codecs that Nvidia could support in hardware and even more in software, but they choose not to support in one, the other or both. There is some speculation as to Nvidia not wanting to pay licensing fees for the codecs.
Kodi includes their own media player. Kodi development and distribution is based in the majority of countries that do not have software patents as a thing, so Kodi does not have to pay licensing fees. Because they have wider audio and video codec support, their player experience is far superior to the Plex player on the Nvidia Shield.
If you like the Kodi media player but prefer the Plex interface, I highly recommend that you use the Plex Kodi plugin as Heciruam suggested. It works very well for integration to a Plex media server ecosystem, far better than the native Plex app. I use it on more than just the Nvidia Shield TV.
Regarding discussions on Plex using the Kodi media player, in countries that do have and enforce software patents (e.g. the U.S.A.), if some company was to distribute the Kodi media player as part of their package (or roll their own media player using the libavcodec codec library that Kodi uses and implement the license-encumbered codecs) then they would have to either pay licensing fees to the codec patent holders, or they could roll the dice and not pay the codec patent holders and gamble on if they will be sued. Either way, it is probably a cost and/or legal headache that Plex does not want to get into regardless of software development/integration/support effort.
Tried it tonight - I switched off all the Kodi menus and got Plex to launch automatically. The interface looks much better than the official Plex app. It is a shame you can’t set recordings in it.
I love the plex Kodi add-on, I just wish I could figure out how to disable the blurry artwork effect. I’m not a fan. Does anyone know how to turn that off?
