I’ve spent a few frustrating days trying to get sporting to display properly in Plex. I’ve searched through the forums and I’m still confused on how to use the best technique. My goal is to make it easy to go through previous seasons and find games. So if possible, I’d rather have it set up as a TV show with seasons. Either of these would work ok. In both cases, I’m disabling Plex/TVDB and just using the Personal Media Agent.
TV Section name: NBA
TV Series: Team XX
Seasons: 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19
Episodes names: “Team XX vs Team YY”, etc. sorted by game date
But honestly, for simplicity’s sake, this would be easier since I’m only archiving one team:
TV Section name: Team XX
TV Series: 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19
Seasons: [Option to show seasons disabled]
Episodes names: “Team XX vs Team YY”, etc. sorted by game date
Key detail: I’m using MKV’s for the recordings, because they’re a mix of Mpeg 1, Mpeg2, and h264.
I’ve tried a number of naming schemes to pull this off. But something always goes wrong. Here is my current naming scheme (which could be changed if needed!):
/NBA/Team XX/Team XX - 2019-01-19 - Team XX vs. Team YY
This gives me the proper structure in Plex, however, the game names are not “Team XX vs. Team YY”, instead they are always simply “2019-01-19”, no matter how I name the file. I have also added the original airdate to the MKV metadata, which shows properly in Plex. But when I add the title of the game in the MKV, Plex also ignores that.
So, if you’ve read this far, two big questions.
- What’s the trick to having Plex crawl these files and actually defaulting to “Team XX vs. Team YY” as the name of the episodes?
- Am I missing anything when it comes to naming and setting it up in Plex?
I’m definitely frustrated that Plex doesn’t have any way to make this easier, considering how popular sports are. Even if there is no easy sports database, just a category that understands how to sort sports based on basic naming techniques would be great.
