Why is there no consistent interface between players?

I’m very confused why this thing is different on every damn platform. And when are you going to update the ones you have to support the live DVR and guide?

Be VERY careful what you ask for. In an attempt to “standardize” the interface’s Plex is quite likely to dumb down the better ones to conform with the ones that cannot be programmed to the higher standards of a few or the developers are not able to make them conform to the higher standards.

Often making things the same you make them all like the weakest one.

Also there is a LOT of diversity among users where they want different things out of their Plex interface and often those desired differences are expressed in very different desires for the interface and very different ways of using Plex.

I vastly prefer the Roku interface over all the others but there are plenty of people that prefer the Android style.

Plex could make the interfaces sufficiently customizable that each user could make each interface look and act the way they want but Plex has said that the level of customization required would make it too complex to maintain.

My own preference would be to turn each developer or set of developers loose to make their interface the best it can be. But that will not happen either because it seems that their is an extreme interest in standardization.

Personally I detest standardization because I do not want my interface to be made out of ticky tacky like the houses in Little Boxes by Malvina Reynolds.

I want difference and diversity in most everything as that makes things more interesting.

That right there just made me cancel my subscription after giving it a second go. I’m not going to buy a bunch of different devices to use Plex when I can just set up something dumb like UMS and the integrated DLNA functionality of all my devices.

I like your customization idea, but it’s still infuriating; especially with non-technical people in the house.

To be clear the guide is planned to be on every player so you can record from where ever. Initial “Set up”, like configuring the tuner for the first time, is done on the server which manages everything is what Trumpy81 was talking about…

Every device doesn’t have it because things take time and different platforms have different development hurdles. Like the required complete rewrite of the Roku app which has been in progress.

Though not true, we accept that folks think we like one platform over another. If we release something for iOS/Apple Tv first, Android folks think we hate Android. If we do Android first, Apple folks think we hate Apple devices. If we wait till each feature is done on every platform then you will be waiting for a very long time for anything.

As far as the “look” we try to be inline with the look of the way apps on a device look, and use elements from the API. So our Android TV app looks like and Android TV app. I personally don’t like Apple TV at all and would hate for the Android TV interface to be the same.

From the (few) devices I have I still don’t see a lot of consistency in the options, though. I’d love to use one of the crapload of Raspberry Pi’s I have about, but the lack of guide there (totally) and the old interface on things like the Fire Stick are really just not cutting it.

I see the advantage if the media server itself was the primary use, but I’m really interested in the DVR functionality to get rid of my Windows Media Center that is getting more and more of a hassle to support. Especially with it becoming depreciated and eventually halted completely.

So will the Official (not orcas) app be updated to the new uni with all the latest features included.

At some point, but don’t expect it to all happen at once. When X feature part is done they will release that feature when the next feature is done on platform x that will be released.
