Why is This Transcoding?

Server Version#: 1.24.0.4921 (DSM 7 - DS718+)
Player Version#: 8.20 (Android - Fire TV Box)

Hello all,

I have a stream that seems to be transcoding but for the life of me I do not know why it is. The Plex client is set to maximum home and the stream bitrate is set to original on the PMS. This is a MP4 file, so it should be natively supported on the Fire TV Box. Anything else I need to review on either the PMS side or the PMP side?

Thanks,
Steve

What exactly is that subtitle format?
I have never ever seen that before.
Subs are often a cause of transcoding.
Does the file direct play if you turn the subs off?

The problem is the subtitles.

EIA_608 subtitles are the “Closed Captions” used by TV broadcasters (Wikipedia).

I’m not aware of any Plex client that can direct play them. When enabled, the Plex Media Server must burn them into the video stream, hence the transcode.

I haven’t tried it, but this might help:

I learn something new every day.
Beyond having never seen them before I had no idea what they were.
I just assumed certain subs and transcoding go hand in hand.
Hence asking him to turn them off.

I ran into them when I started experimenting with LiveTV/DVR.

Based on the Wikipedia article, they originated with NTSC analog broadcasts. So anyone outside of US/Canada/Mexico has probably never run across them.

They’re definitely not well supported in Plex clients. I rarely enable them them so as to avoid video transcoding (I run PMS on a Synology NAS, which does not handle burning subtitles well).

I will turn the subs off and see what happens. This def does not happen on my Nvidia Shield, which is clearly more powerful than a 4 year old Fire device!
