So I have a Full LED 4K TV, but it just doesn’t like HDR content - too much bloom for me (I’ll be upgrading to OLED soon), so I prefer to watch my content in SDR.
Assuming I turn HDR off in the Chromecast settings (4K Chromecast with Google TV) - will the Chromecast tonemap for me without transcoding? I don’t want to have to transcode at all, but don’t want washed out colours.
EDIT: My TV is a Sony X90LU - can the TV handle the conversion from HDR to SDR?
I think there might be some misconception.
There’s no tone mapping without transcoding your video – tone mapping will decode the video and re-encode it, applying a tone mapping algorithm.
Thanks. I’ve added an edit to my post. I’m using a Sony X90LU TV - having tested turning HDR off at Chromecast level and playing via Plex - it does seem to be direct playing, but to my eye looks fine and is not washed out. I’m wondering where down the line the conversion is happening, as my Chromecast is set to output SDR but I understand the Chromecast doesn’t convert the signal? Is it possible my TV is doing the work?
