Windows 10 Plex client updates on every run, even when on current version

Server Version#:N/A
Player Version#:1.17.0.1376-439f8b7f

On every run of the Plex app, pops up “An update is available” with the options to “Update Now” or “Remind Me Later”

Choosing “Update Now” brings up a UAC window asking if a previous version may make changes (ex: 1.16.xxxx… or 1.14.0.13400axx754x-x86_64.exe) and then the version REVERTS to the old plex. This then repeats when the current version is downloaded (asking to update to 1.17.0.1376-439f8b7f and then asking to update - to an older version - on the next execution. )

That happened to me a few versions ago. There might be a more elegant method, but an uninstall/re-install fixed things for me.

  1. Uninstall using Windows control panel (vs 3rd party uninstaller programs)
  2. Delete %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex (c:\users\user_name\AppData\Local\Plex)
  3. Download current version from plex.tv/download
  4. Install.
  • AppData is hidden by default. If necessary, check the box for Hidden Items in File Explorer -> View.
  • If running Plex Media Server or Plex Media Player on the same system, make sure you do not delete their directories in AppData.

Thanks for the reply.

I was hoping not to have to uninstall and re-install. In running through a few checks this morning I discovered about 15 old versions of Plex in c:\Users\xxxxx\AppData\Local\Plex\cache\updates and deleted them all.

I’ve tried two re-starts and it’s been clean so far. I didn’t want to jinx it by claiming that was sufficient to fix the issue. Hopefully it will continue to be okay, though it I may not know for at least two more updates whether it was sufficient.

For future searches, if I don’t reply to this post, we’ll assume that my manual deletion of the …/updates folder was enough to prevent this issue.

I was getting annoyed by the update message but deleting everything in /updates has resolved it.

Thanks :+1:t2:
