[Windows 10 Update KB4338819 issue] Conversion Failed. The transcoder exited due to an error

I think Microsoft fixed the problem today for some of us on Win 10. Sat down an hour ago I went to reapply the update KB4338819, and there was another update in that list too, KB4345421.

It’s been an hour now of non-stop streaming and nothing has went went wrong. Could be too early to tell but I do think this emergency update could have magically solved the issue. Will report back soon.

+1 for cbabb’s feedback here. After a failed attempt to remove KB4338819, I did a repair on the PMS install and ran this new Windows update. Successfully made it through an entire episode of a one-hour show with no transcoding fail!

I haven’t installed anything on purpose recently, but I also haven’t encountered the error since restarting last night. I have to see since earlier, restarts only fixed the problem temporarily.

It certainly seems more stable than before

Installed the latest windows 10 update KB43455421 and didn’t experience the transcoder error

Fantastic! That makes three of us. It’s been two hours now for myself. No hiccups.

I’m on Win 12 R2 for my server

I am seeing the issue as well these last several days. I had run Windows updates on Friday, and the issue appeared after that. The issue is happening across multiple devices ( Specifically ROKU and Win 7)

I have Installed the Newest Windows update, and the Most Recent Plex update just now.

Hopefully this is a fix for me as well

Fk

I also Installed update KB43455421 and haven’t crashed in a few hours now.

Those of you that installed the update and have had a few hours of no issues - did rebooting the server work as a temporary fix before like others had reported?

Nope, nothing at all fixed it for me before installing the update.
Regardless of server uptime I would crash within 1-5 minutes of playing a show

Update seems to fix the issue for me as well. Reboots fixed it temporarily, but it’s been working for a lot longer than before after the update

I had been having the same issue all day. I downloaded the latest updates for both Plex and Windows 10 and the problem was resolved. Seems the issue was just a matter of Plex and Windows catching up to each other.

@courageousrobot : Reboot is always a Temp Fix.

however i had it go down again today. waiting to see if the issues continue again.

Plex asked to install an update that seems to have fixed the problem.
Ive been watching some TV series with no glitches for some hours now.
Thanks.

Installed KB4345421. and did not have any issues. Will try again tomorrow.

I’m currently running KB4345421 on Windows 10 and seeing the error (was on it when the error started)

I was just going to suggest the latest windows update fix but some of you have found it already !

Anyone still with an issue after this, please provide fresh logs

This worked like a charm for me. In particular I was not having an issue streaming movie files but I was having issues with watching Live TV. It sucked because today was my first time using the Live TV/DVR feature so I’m glad I was able to find this solution. I had tried a few other things including restarting the server but this was the only thing that worked.

Thanks

Check your update history to see if you have both recent hot fixes installed. 4345421 and 4338819. Let us know if you do.

Try uninstalling both: wusa /uninstall /kb:4345421 reboot then wusa /uninstall /kb:4338819 reboot. Once both are uninstalled, check for updates to reinstall them. Repair or update your install of PMS.

Keep in mind you have removed a security update. Which appears to have been rectified by an emergency patch out of Windows normal Patch Tuesday. Please install KB4338819 then KB4345421. After you have done that, give it a go.

Further mucking about revealed that when I downloaded KB4345421 and attempted to apply it claimed I had it, upon attempting a reboot for other reasons it appeared to be applying it or something else (got the long “please wait while applying whatever” message. When it came back up I managed to watch about three hours without issue as a test.

I believe 4345421 or something else was awaiting a reboot.

I can confirm that KB4345421 update fixed the problem on my Windows 10 Pro 64Bit machine.
