Windows 8 issue using Plex Connect and the trailers app on apple TV

Hi All

I have been trying to get this working on a Windows 8 machine since apple pushed out the latest channels and the need for the SSL fix. I feel like I have tried anything and haven't been able to find a post that has had a fix for windows 8 specifically apart from everyone saying use the absolute path which I can confirm I have tried and still no luck.

I also just tested it all on a Windows XP machine and it all worked first pop which made me think that there must be something on the Windows 8 machine that is blocking it.

ATV Model: Apple TV3 - MD199X/A, 5.3 (6105)

DNS server set on the ATV: 192.168.1.68

OS: Windows 8

The local IP address of the device that PlexConnect is installed on: 192.168.1.68

Plex media server (PMS) is installed on: Windows 8 PC, 192.168.1.68 - PMS Version 0.9.8.6

The PlexConnect version number. Github downloaded on 9/9/2013 5:00pm

The content of my 'Settings.cfg' file:

[PlexConnect]
logpath = .
enable_dnsserver = True
ip_webserver = 0.0.0.0
prevent_atv_update = True
port_dnsserver = 53
enable_plexconnect_autodetect = True
port_pms = 32400
port_webserver = 80
ip_plexconnect = 0.0.0.0
certfile = ./assets/certificates/trailers.pem
ip_dnsmaster = 8.8.8.8
loglevel = Normal
ip_pms = 192.168.178.10
enable_plexgdm = True
port_ssl = 443

Here is my output from running PlexConnect.py

Everything on Apple TV works perfectly until I click on the trailers channel which on the xp machine goes straight to plex but on the Windows 8 it just stops at the above line and on the screen just says "Trailers is unavailable, try again later" after saying "accessing trailers" for sometime. I notice if I turn windows firewall off on the windows 8 machine it comes up with "Trailers is unavailable, try again later" straight away without the long pause of saying "accessing trailers"

Also if i browse to https://192.168.1.68:443 it comes up saying "This connection is untrusted" which i believe is a good sign, i hope.

Any help on this would be much appreciated as I don't really want to roll back from windows 8.

Thanks all in advance :)

Hi Mate, i followed the below instructions to a T and it worked with no worries.

Let me know how you go.

Here's the link..

Dont you have to add the cert to the trusted section in windows?

I just followed the instructions and it worked.

Give it a go.

Thanks McDaz, will give it a go over the next few days and let you know how I get on. Thanks heaps for your help :slight_smile:

Hi again McDaz, Just started from scratch and followed those instructions exactly but still have the same issue. tries to open trailers then just says 'Trailers is unavailable. Try again later'. Any other ideas bud?

From the log it looks like the aTV certificate is not correct...

The instructions create a trailers.der file, try renaming to trailers.cer and reload the profile of the ATV (make sure you remove all other profiles)

.DER is actually a valid extension as well: eg. https://support.ssl.com/index.php?/Knowledgebase/Article/View/19

This may be a silly question but when you run the PlexConnect.py file and the command window opens do you leave it running ? It must stay open from my experience it needs to stay open. Also the plex server needs to be running befor you run the PlexConnect.py file.

Currently stock PlexConnect runs in a terminal window - this needs to stay up, yes.

PMS doesn't neccessarily need to be up and running at PlexConnect's startup - we will do a re-discover of nearby Plex Servers as soon as we need access.

Hi all, we have lift off!!! Unfortunately as I was starting to get desperate I was trying multiple things at once and don’t know which exact one thing was the silver bullet, I know… Rookie right. I can confirm that one of the last things I tried was re-doing the certificate and renaming it to .cer as opposed to the .der as suggested by drewbie, thanks bud. One other interesting observation was once I had loaded the profile onto the Apple TV through the iPhone configurator I would then have a profiles option under settings on the Apple TV, now that I have it working i can’t actually see any profile option under settings on the Apple TV which I find strange as its almost like there is no profile loaded however it is all working perfectly. With my working setup I have not ended up using the absolute path for the cert location in the settings.cfg file, I have retained the default path as loaded by plexconnect and windows 8 finds it perfectly. All in all I am super happy that I have got it all up and running…finally… and want to pass on thanks to everyone for their suggestions, if I can help anyone with a similar setup please feel free to message me as I must of tried almost every possible combination of configurations. Glad it’s over, phew! :slight_smile: happy plexing peeps :slight_smile:

Hi all!! I have a problem. Apple TV 3 + plexconnect + pms working fine. But maybe one hour later, It crashes and cannot enter on the media from Apple tv. Pms in windows 8.
