Windows App No Longer Playing Video

Server Version#: 1.19.1.2701
Player Version#: 1.8.2.1192

A few weeks ago, I was notified in-app that there was a Windows 10 app update, so I dutifully downloaded the update and applied it. Afterwards, however, the app no longer plays videos. I can get them to play in browser (but it has that odd skipping issue that some browsers seem to have) and on my Xbox. I can even play it on my Surface Pro Windows 10 app (also recently updated).

I can browse the libraries, but when I attempt to play anything I get a spinning orange circle.

I’ve removed all Plex registry entries and folders. Still no joy. Logs don’t seem to provide any insight either. Just that it shows me trying to play a video.

Anything I haven’t tried here? I searched the forums and Reddit before posting this and tried all that I could find in those. But none of the issues I found seem specific to my issue.

I also have an issue with the Windows player is it possible that this only happens on video’s encoded in H.265/HEVC?

It might be, that is my preferred profile in Handbrake. I’ll try converting one of the files to a different format to see if it plays.

Hi @drindianajones . This sounds similar to another issue due to codec download problems. Will you please:

  • Install Plex for Windows 1.9
  • Restart Plex for Windows
  • Play one of those videos that results in the spinner stall
  • Quit Plex for Windows
  • Attach %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex\Logs\Plex.log to this thread.

Hi @deactivated
I’ve applied the latest Plex for Windows app and did what you said. The file is attached: Plex.log (198.5 KB)

I will note, that I was able to play my DVR recorded video just fine.

Thank you; that was super helpful.

There’s an issue downloading this codec in particular. We’re tracking a fix for this and hope to knock it out soon.

Let’s consolidate into Plex for Mac (desktop player) - recently fails to playback - #3 by mattseeley.

Thanks, Matt. I’ll track it over there.

Same thing happens for the Windows plex player v1.9.0.1203-00f2b4d9
This happens only with the windows app player. Accessing directly from the browser this is working.

Any progress with this codec issue? I’m getting the same error in my logs. It has broken my Windows PC. Won’t play on app or webapp. Just sits there spinning yellow circle all day. Every other machine in the house works except this ONE. It is absolutely frustrating.

In the other thread on this topic (Plex for Mac (desktop player) - recently fails to playback) it was said that they’ve ID’d the problem and are fixing.
