Windows - I tried to clone my Plex Server, won't start on destination PC

Server Version#:1.41.3.9292
Player Version#:doesn’t matter
<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>

My existing Plex is a Win10 machine and 7 years old. I now have a more powerful Win11 machine I want to use so I followed the below instructions. Both machines have the same version of Plex.

https://support.plex.tv/articles/201370363-move-an-install-to-another-system/

I followed the instructions…shut down Plex on source, exported/imported (Plex portion only registry, copied the files from source to destination (took hours).

Source Plex server runs fine.

Destination Plex server won’t start.

A restart did not help. The destination/new Win11 simply won’t run Plex.

The OS level logs show nothing unusual. What can I check?

The Plex Crash Uploader.1 file shows the following:

Nevermind, I figured it out. It was the database.

I copied the database folder from source to destination, while Plex was shutdown on the source. I ran the SQLite commands which now said “OK” instead of “malformed database”.

That did it.

Your Plex server’s database file is damaged. Which means that either

  • you did not shut down Plex server cleanly on the source machine before starting the copy process
  • Plex server was running on the target machine while the copy process was running
  • the database was already damaged on the source machine

You can try to repair the database using the .bat file from here: DBRepair/Windows at master · ChuckPa/DBRepair · GitHub
or you can restore an older backup of the Plex server database file https://support.plex.tv/articles/202485658-restore-a-database-backed-up-via-scheduled-tasks/
(but I recommend you to use the repair .bat file even with this restored backup before trying to start the server)
Both actions must be performed while Plex server is shut down (check the Windows task tray area for the presence of the Plex logo! It must not be visible there.)

Keep in mind that if you copied the whole Plex registry branch, you therefore copied your server’s “identity”. After doing that, you must never start the old Plex server again – or you will have major issues with claiming and/or remote access.

There is a possibility that Plex was running on the source. I stopped it, recopied it and now it worked properly on the destination/new server.

This was the resolution to the problem I accidently created.
