Windows Player almost unusable with poor connection to server

Server Version#: 1.40.2.8395
Player Version#: 1.96.0.177-dc5df788

I use Plex in a different country to where my server is based and as such the connection to the server is often very poor.

While I can accept that streaming media is not going to be an option, I have an issue in that the whole app becomes unresponsive and often crashes or throws error messages, even when I’m trying to watch downloaded content. These issues disappear when I turn off wifi.

I strongly suspect the app is trying really hard to connect to the server, is there any way to let it know that this is futile? Or to at least have it fail more gracefully without preventing me using the downloads functionality?

You have the exact same problem as me here: Plex Desktop player wants to stream over bad connection instead of using downloaded media - #2 by char3184

Your solution would be to play the media from the Download section of Plex instead of the Home Screen as the Plex Player does not appear smart enough to realise it has downloaded local copy and automatically prioritise and use that instead of trying to stream

Hi sdchew, sorry but it was me that provided that solution to you in the other thread!

I have a more pressing concern in that even loading the downloads section is slow and sometimes fails completely, I think because in some way the plex client is still trying to connect to the plex server for some reason
