Hi, I"m brand new to Plex and was really excited about getting started. Witch Plex goes where on my laptop I think it’s the Plex server. And on my LG smart tv with Nvidia Shield plug in it’s Plex App? Witch one uploads my movies?
I think these guides will help you get started:

Thank you
Ok I read everything on the setup of Plex but I have another question?
Where does my external hard drive that has my movies need to be plug in when setting up my Plex server. In my nvidia shield and it remote connect to my lab top or in my lab top to setup my server with all my movies. And the when done I plug it back into nvidia shield?
No. All media must always be connected ( or be accessible) to the server.
Connect it to the server device and leave it there.
Not wanting to confuse you further but the Shield can actually also be a server and then taking away the need for the laptop.
I’m assuming here that you have installed Plex Media Server on the laptop.
Yes and the external hard drive is Connected to my nvidia shield.
So what you or saying is my Plex server will be setup on my nvidia shield correct with my external hard drive.
And I can setup Plex player on my lab top. Correct.
That’s correct.
Or you can also use the shield as a client.
So with the server being set up on the Shield the laptop need never be on unless you want to view your media on the laptop (use it as a client).
With the server set up on the Shield you can run it also as the client.
Either way if you definitely decide to use the Shield as a server that portable hard drive should be ideally connected to the Shield and left there.
It’s just coincidental that the Shield can also be used a server and client as can your laptop.
It most other cases everything is “either/or”.
I guess the best thing to do would initially be to decide if you want to run the server on the Shield or the Laptop.
I highly recommend you do not use both as a server. It just adds a whole level of complications that I feel you do not need.
I would also suggest you DO actually use the Shield as the server. So if you have already installed Plex Media Server on the laptop uninstall it now. and we can take things from there.
Thank you so much you have been a big help happy Labor Day
We were all new to Plex once over.
If there is anything that you still aren’t clear about just feel free to ask.
Yes! Everyone here, including the Plex people, will be more than happy to confuse you further.
If we cannot spread discord and disinformation what good are we.
