[WORKAROUND] No DTS or DTS-HD support | TCL C715 V644 ITA | Android TV 9

So, let me tell this story: i’ve never actually wrote anything in my life to get support since i could do everything by my own but this is not the case…

PMS is hosted on Windows in a gigabit local network.
Let’s get to the point: i’ve tried everything to get DTS working on my setup which is cabled like this:

TCL C715 <— HDMI 2.0 CABLE (ARC) —> DENON AVR-X1600H

So, setting up Plex for Android TV to use HDMI passthrough seems not working at all: the server reports that the TV hasn’t sent something for a while and trying again seems to not play the video but the audio plays in AAC 2.0 so… not what i wanted.

Checking this forums and other guides on the internet says to use optical passthrough even with ARC, so i tried it: AC3 and E-AC3 movies works fine, but DTS no. So here I tried enabling network logging on Plex on the TCL and logs said that this TV doesn’t support DTS. That’s quite strange since using an hard drive in the USB port and playing a movie in DTS on the integrated media server app passes the audio though ARC fine, getting a direct and clean DTS 5.1.

TCL C715 V644 has 3 different audio passthrough “methods”: Auto, PCM and (literally) Passthrough.
Those tests were done by using the “Passthrough” selection but i tried everything with the other ones.

I wrote a message on an XDA thread with the exact information listed above (not linking because is not related with Plex)
There’s something that I am, doing wrong?
Tell me what logs to put here and i will come with those in some time.

Hope you all can help me!
Thank you in advance: have a great day.

Okay, some updates: here is what i got on network logging on my TCL: Plex for Android TV.log (91.3 KB)

The setup that i’m using is: Plex on Optical passthrough with AC3 and DTS checked, TCL on passthrough, HDMI 2.0 cable with ARC on my Denon. Should i get 5.1 audio right? Yes, but actually no.

Here is what i got on the file (line 896):

Is that a bug on Google ExoPlayer or with Plex?
Greetings.

Hi @DxrEd … Unfortunately there is currently no TV on the market that will passthrough the HD Audio tracks when playing content using the internal Apps. This included DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD.

The only way to get those audio formats through to your AVR would be to use a different Plex client, plugged into either an HDMI port on the TV, or directly into your AVR.

However there is a caveat to that… Both your TV and the AVR must both support EARC, and not just ARC.

Okay, so DTS-HD and Dolby True-HD will not work.
Reading what you said: DTS should work, right?

Lacking of DTS-HD support is not an huge problem since I don’t own movies with DTS-HD.
TV doesn’t support eARC but, as i said earlier, that’s not an huge problem.

Is DTS a lossy codec? It should work with ARC only.

Maybe, but more likely not.

Indeed, DTS is a lossy codec, and it should be transportable over ARC, however I still doubt that the internal apps will support it.

If you have any other way to use Plex, say on a PC connected via HDMI, then that would be better.

So, saying that internal apps don’t support passing other audio than DD, why the TCL Media Server App installed on my TV can passthrough DTS 5.1 audio flawlessly?

This app is like an explorer for USBs connected to the TV and, from this app, i can select a movie and play it. From that app, playing the same movie as I tried to play on the log, passes DTS 5.1 audio nicely.

Am I saying something completely wrong?

Not having a TCL myself, I wasn’t aware that it has such a feature, and if you say this seems to be able to passthrough DTS 5.1 successfully, than it may be that TCL has developed this as their own product.

However that doesn’t mean that TCL will then allow the passthrough of DTS using any other 3rd party app.

An example of this has always been the Playstation consoles. You can insert a BluRay disk and it will play flawlessly, passing through all and any audio format over HDMI. However Sony have NEVER allowed passthrough of the HD audio formats for 3rd Party apps such as Plex, but they do allow passthrough of Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus.

So… is like locked… Hmm: that’s quite strange but oke, thanks for help!

lol… That’s actually a very good way of describing it, yes.

As i was thinking about, the same app that i was talking about supports DLNA. I can do something with the Plex server and trying to play a Plex content through that app using the dlna server: that would be awesome if it works, since I can (teorically) get 5.1 DTS audio!

In theory this might work, yes.

Just do be aware that I have seen a Plex employee make a comment a few days ago that the DLNA feature is no longer maintained or updated, unless a major bug is found.

I would certainly be interested to know if you get this working, just from a curiosity point of view

That means that it will be removed? I hope that it will not happen :sob:

I will try this evening to check if it works!

No, I’ve not heard that it would be removed, just no longer maintained.

That’s better: a great news!

And that works! DLNA server passes DTS 5.1 audio flawlessly!
Check that out if you’re using a TCL TV and Plex!

Cool. Thanks for the feedback. :+1:

Now I’m getting a bit of trouble setting up the right ratio with this app but nothing related to Plex. Have a great day!
