Xbox app not respecting newline in SRT subtitles

When using an external .srt file for subtitles, a newline in the srt file will not be displayed.

Taken from The Lion King 1 1/2,

<i>the place</i>

will be displayed as

the placewhere heroes are born.

Expected display is:

the place
where heroes are born.

A guess, but check the encoding. It should be UTF-8.
Displayed in lower right corner of Windows Notepad or Notepad++.
Windows Notepad: Save As to change.
Notepad ++: Encoding tab → UTF-8, Save.
