Xbox one and Xbox one S not playing any of my MKV's.....

hi everyone, my old Xbox one and now new Xbox one S both seem to be transcoding all my MKV’s causing them to constantly buffer and becoming unwatchable. i got a synology ds416play about a month ago and was running the new plex dvr update 2 server from it and also running the same on my MacBook.

all the files play on my iPhones, iPads and MacBook but NOTHING will play on my xbox. I’ve tried analysing, optimising but nothing works.

ill upload this mornings latest log where i tried playing Swiss Army Man 1080p h.264 in an MKV if someone could please see what is going wrong i would be beyond grateful as my wife is ready to beat me to death on how much money I’ve thrown into this and it doesn’t work…

if you need more logs I’ve got all 5 waiting to be looked into,

thanks anyway

ps hard wired on DMZ mode to bt home hub 5 if that helps

A sample file might be necessary to actually determine what is happening. Judging from your log it looks like the Xbox One is simply shutting the stream down which normally means there is something in the file that the Xbox One just does not like (But the client isn’t reporting a failed playback attempt.) This support article talks about how to create a sample file.

One thing you can try doing is turning off direct play in the Xbox One app settings and see if a simple remux fixes the issue. Looking at the playback with Safari it looks like the entire file is simply remuxed for playback so it’s possible the same thing may fix the issue for the Xbox One playback as well.

okay, I’ve tried turning off direct play and also direct streaming separately and together and that still didn’t help.

I’ve now just restarted my NAS server and started to play a sample 60 sec of the same film and it still does the constant buffering and is unplayable. here is the server log for it and its only the last 4/5 min of the log that is applicable.

I’m trying to get more guidance for you. What it looks like to me is that your Xbox is connecting via WAN instead of the local network.

In that log above we can see that Safarai is connecting locally after the Xbox attempts to connect to what appears to be the WAN interface. Unfortunately, I don’t know how to troubleshoot this particular issue because the only two times I can think of where this would come into play is when AP Isolation is enabled forcing the separation or NAT Loopback on the router isn’t properly redirecting the WAN requests locally since they’re all to the same IP.

jmckee you star you… so my old xbox one used wifi and hard wired and neither worked but I forgot i only tried the new xbox one s hard wired which was working with games and the network connection was good so it told me, i presumed that the same wifi problems would happen.
After i removed ethernet cable and did some resets it played immediately this time round so not sure if the power adaptors were causing the wan issues or the router but i played three films this afternoon and all worked fine.

still not sure whats happened but its working so thank you again…

I’m not gonna lie, I can’t say for sure I know what happened either, but I am definitely glad it’s working for you now!
