wont play MKV files after Xbox One update

after the xbox one update this week, i can not play mkv files. i can play on pc, mobile, and roku. does anyone else have this issue? is there a known working fix, or is this the product of the direct steaming of mkv?

here is zip file of my logs

correction, just got the error on a mp4 file i had watched before the update.

error is “playback error”

Not sure if it’s related but I would first fix the The allowedNetwork preference is not in the format ip/network error in your logs by using the correct format on the Plex Web network settings page. Is your Xbox using wifi or a wired connection?

Direct Play MKV is a bit glitchy for me. As seen in this screen shot, there are artifacts which appear during scenes with lots of fast moving video, action scenes, etc. The XBOX one is wired to a 24 port Cisco gigabit switch, same switch as the server. All wired connections. These same files which I have transcoded to .mp4 with handbrake play fine.

I got many “playback error” on most of my mkv bluray rip. I wa pleased to see a new version on Plex for XBOX one but always unusable… (all wired gigabit link to the server)

If you have playback errors could you please enable logging in your settings of the app and then post your PMS logs from the time you tried playback. We can’t do much without more details of your media, I’m afraid!

Dom thanks for the response. This is my first time accessing and posting log files so let me know if this is what you need to see in order to help. I just enabled logging on the XBOX one app, started playing a couple of MKV movie files on the XBOX. The first movie glitched once a few minutes into it. The second movie started glitching just a few seconds into the Warner Brothers logo at the start.

Also just to note, the artifacts do not appear when plex transcodes these same MKV files for play on Roku or Chromecast. It seems to only happen on the direct play. Unfortunately the only device I have which is capable of the direct MKV play is the XBOX one so I have not tried other platforms.

Checking all of those logs, not one has any mention of playback from an Xbox One. Since you just enabled network logging the easiest way to ensure that the log has the information needed you should restart the plex media server application and then attempt to play one of the files causing problems. After that upload the file named ‘Plex Media Server.log’ (The ones with the numbers are the logs that have rolled over and you are missing the current log from your uploads above)

This support article explains them a little more and what the different types are to give you some more information:

This is helpful, thanks jmckee. I will read this support article and post a more relevant log file.

This is really ‘interesting’ (also read: ‘annoying’). Please could we have a sample of this file to try out here? If we can get the artefacts reliably, then we can raise this with MS.

How about we split the artifacting issues into another thread?
